Part 2: Blood on the Marble

Part 2: Blood on the Marble
(Scene: The grand foyer of the sprawling estate. The air is thick with tension, smelling faintly of the spilled champagne seeping into the imported Italian marble. JULIAN is on his knees, fiercely clutching his trembling mother, HELEN. SERENA stands a few feet away, the initial shock of Julian’s sudden arrival melting into a chilling, predatory calmness.)
Julian: (Screaming at the top of his lungs, glaring up at Serena)
Guards! Get in here! Pack her bags and throw her out on the street! I don't care if her name is on the deed!
Helen: (Clutching Julian’s lapels, her voice ragged and breathless)
No! Julian, no! She is not... she is not the one who needs to leave!
Julian: (Looking down at his mother, his face twisting in heartbreak)
Mom, look at yourself! You’re on your knees! She’s treating you like an animal! I won't let my wife abuse you in our own home!
Serena: (Stepping gracefully over the shattered glass, her gold silk robe trailing behind her)
Abuse? Is that what you call this, Julian? I call it a plea deal.
(Julian freezes. He slowly stands up, stepping protectively in front of Helen. He glares at Serena, his fists clenched at his sides.)
Julian: Shut your mouth, Serena. I'm calling my lawyers right now. I’m filing for divorce. You'll get nothing!
Serena: (A dark, humorless laugh escapes her lips)
I'll get everything. Because our prenuptial agreement has a very specific morality clause regarding felony convictions, darling.
Julian: (Frowning, his anger momentarily replaced by confusion)
What are you talking about?
Serena: Ask her, Julian. Ask your sweet, frail, weeping mother why she was cleaning my shoe.
(Julian looks down at Helen. She is completely curled in on herself, her face buried in her hands, violently trembling. She refuses to look up at him.)
Serena: She was wiping away the evidence. Weren't you, Helen?
(Serena reaches into the deep pocket of her silk robe and pulls out a small, heavy crystal vial. It contains a few drops of a cloudy, amber liquid. She holds it up to the light of the chandelier.)
Serena: Aconitum ferox. Indian Monkshood. A very rare, very agonizing, and historically untraceable poison. At least, it used to be untraceable before my private toxicologist ran a specialized heavy-metals panel on my father’s blood work this morning.
Julian: (His face draining of color)
Your father died of a sudden heart attack last week. The doctors said—
Serena: (Her voice cracking like a whip, echoing through the massive hall)
The doctors were paid off! By her!
(Serena points a perfectly manicured, shaking finger directly at Helen.)
Serena: She slipped it into his evening tea every night for a month! She knew my father was meeting with his attorneys last Friday to finalize his new will. He figured out you were embezzling from the company's capital accounts, Julian. He was going to cut you out completely. He was going to leave you both with nothing. So, Mommy Dearest stepped in to protect her little boy's trust fund.
Julian: (Stepping back, his breathing turning into panicked gasps)
Mom... tell me she's lying. Tell me she's insane.
(Helen finally looks up. Her eyes are bloodshot, her face streaked with mascara and tears. But there is no denial in her expression. Only the profound, hollow terror of a rat caught in a trap.)
Helen: (Sobbing uncontrollably, reaching out for Julian’s pant leg)
He was going to ruin you, Julian! He was going to throw us out into the street! You don't know what it’s like to have nothing! I couldn't let him take your future away! I did it for us!
(Julian recoils violently, kicking his leg away from his mother's grasp. He stares at her as if he is looking at a stranger. A murderer.)
Serena: (Her voice drops to a lethal, quiet whisper)
I confronted her an hour ago. I told her I had the toxicology report, the bank transfers to the doctors, and the security footage of her tampering with his teapot.
Julian: (Staring at Serena in absolute horror)
You knew... you knew she murdered your father, and instead of calling the police, you made her shine your shoes?
Serena: I gave her a choice, Julian. I placed that vial on the table. I told her she could swallow the rest of the poison herself and save us all the trial... or she could get on her hands and knees, kiss the dirt off my heels, and beg for my mercy until the authorities arrived. She chose to grovel.
(The distant, wailing sound of approaching sirens begins to bleed through the grand estate's heavy oak doors. The flashing red and blue lights begin to reflect faintly through the foyer windows, casting eerie shadows across the marble floor.)
Serena: Looks like her time is up.
(Julian stands paralyzed in the center of the room. He looks at his mother, a cold-blooded killer sobbing on the floor. He looks at his wife, a vengeful, terrifying woman who orchestrated a psychological torture session instead of seeking immediate justice. He realizes, with a sickening drop in his stomach, that he is trapped between two monsters.)
Julian: (Whispering, utterly broken, dropping his hands to his sides)
My God... you're both completely sick.
Serena: (She turns her back to him, picking up a fresh glass of champagne from the side table and taking a slow, victorious sip.)
No, darling. I'm just a very wealthy orphan. And you... are the penniless son of a murderer. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

(The heavy fists of the police begin pounding on the grand front doors, the sound echoing like thunder through the hollow, broken home.)
