Chapter 6 - The First Morning

The storm finally broke just before dawn. The heavy, dark clouds parted, allowing the first pale rays of morning sunlight to filter through the trees in Daniel’s neighborhood.

Daniel pulled his SUV into the driveway of his two-story suburban home. The house had felt like a tomb for the past three years. Today, it felt entirely different.

He turned off the engine and looked in the rearview mirror. Emily and Tommy were both asleep in the back seat. Between them, in a makeshift bed of towels inside a sturdy plastic laundry basket, Barnaby the puppy was snoring softly.

Daniel got out, opened the back door, and gently unbuckled Tommy. He carried the sleeping boy up the front steps, unlocking the door and carrying him straight up to one of the spare bedrooms. He laid Tommy down on the fresh, clean sheets, pulling a heavy quilt over him.

He went back out for Emily. She woke up as he opened her door, rubbing her eyes.

"Are we there?" she mumbled, her voice thick with exhaustion.

"We're here," Daniel said. He picked up the laundry basket containing the puppy. "Come on inside. Let's get you to bed."

Emily followed him into the house. She stopped in the foyer, looking around. The house was clean, warm, and smelled like cedar and old books. There were no empty beer bottles on the floor. There were no holes punched in the drywall.

Daniel led her upstairs to the bedroom next to Tommy's.

"You're right next door to him," Daniel said, setting the laundry basket on the floor near the bed. "And Barnaby can sleep right here on the rug."

Emily climbed into the bed. She looked incredibly small surrounded by the fluffy pillows. Daniel pulled the blankets up to her chin.

He turned to leave, to give her space to sleep, but her voice stopped him.

"Officer Daniel?"

He paused, turning back. "Just Daniel is fine, sweetheart. What is it?"

"Why did you do it?" she asked. Her large brown eyes were studying him with an intensity that belonged to a much older soul. "Why did you take us?"

Daniel stepped back to the side of the bed. He sat down on the edge, looking at the little girl who had walked through a hurricane of fear and come out the other side.

"A long time ago," Daniel said softly, "my wife and I wanted kids more than anything in the world. We got this house ready. We bought toys. But then she got sick, and she went away. And for a long time, I forgot how to be happy."

He reached down and gently petted Barnaby's head. The puppy licked his hand in his sleep.

"When you walked into the station tonight," Daniel continued, looking back at Emily, "and I saw how brave you were... how you risked everything to save your brother and this little dog... it reminded me of what it feels like to love something that much. You didn't just save them, Emily. I think you saved me, too."

Emily didn't say anything for a long time. She just watched him. Then, slowly, she pulled one arm out from under the blankets and reached out.

Daniel leaned in, and the little girl wrapped her arm around his neck, giving him a clumsy, sleepy hug.

"Thank you, Daniel," she whispered.

She let go, closed her eyes, and within seconds, she was deeply asleep.

Daniel walked out into the hallway, leaving the door cracked open so she could hear her brother breathing in the next room. He walked downstairs, into his quiet kitchen, and watched the sunrise through the window.

The house wasn't empty anymore. The silence was broken. And for the first time in years, Daniel Mercer felt exactly where he was supposed to be.
