Chapter 8 - The Billionaire's Vow

I stared at Alexander, my mind struggling to process what I had just heard.
Guardianship.
He wanted to keep us?
On the screen, Richard was trembling. The facade of the tough, abusive guardian crumbled entirely in the face of true, absolute power.
"You can't do this," Richard whined weakly. "They're my blood."
"You lost the right to call them blood when you laid a hand on them," Alexander fired back, his voice cracking like a whip. "The paperwork is being faxed to the embassy right now. Sign it. Or Marcus will personally deliver the evidence to the authorities in ten minutes."
Richard looked at the two men in cheap suits beside him. They both looked away, wanting no part of Alexander Sterling's wrath.
Slowly, agonizingly, Richard picked up a pen.
He signed the papers.
Alexander cut the feed.
The study plunged into silence again. The only sound was the ticking of the antique grandfather clock in the corner.
I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. I felt like I was floating outside my own body.
Alexander closed the laptop and turned to face me. He suddenly looked tired, the adrenaline of the confrontation fading.
"Is it true?" I managed to squeak out. "You're our guardian now?"
Alexander knelt down so he was eye-level with me. It was the first time I realized how truly tall he was, yet he made himself small just for me.
"If you want me to be," he said softly. "I know I am a stranger. I know you have every reason not to trust adults. But I also know that this house has felt like a tomb for a very long time. And since you and Maya arrived... it feels alive again. Leo smiles now."
He reached out, tentatively, and tucked a stray lock of hair behind my ear.
"You gave me my son back, Lily. Let me give you your childhood back."
I broke.
All the walls I had built over the last year—the toughness, the hyper-vigilance, the fierce independence—shattered into a million pieces.
I launched myself forward, wrapping my arms around Alexander's neck, burying my face in his expensive suit, and sobbed.
He caught me, pulling me tight against his chest.
And as I cried, he began to pat my back. Slowly. Rhythmically.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
May you like
The same heartbeat rhythm I had given his son.
"I've got you," he whispered into my hair. "You're safe. You're home."
