Chapter 7 - Dawn Over the Estate

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting a brilliant golden glow over the rain-washed stone courtyards of the Rosetti estate.

For the first time in months, the air felt crisp, clean, and entirely devoid of impending doom.

I walked down the grand corridor carrying a leather-bound book of fairy tales under my arm, my footsteps light and steady against the hardwood floor.

When I gently pushed open the door to Lily's bedroom, she was sitting up in bed, propped against a mountain of white pillows, looking much healthier than she had in the damp alley three nights ago.

The heavy silver wolf bracelet gleamed brightly around her wrist as she turned her head and beamed at me.

"Arthur! You're finally here," she cheered, patting the edge of the mattress. "Did you bring the book?"

"Of course I did, little bird," I said, pulling up a chair beside her bed and sitting down. "Where did we leave off last time?"

"The part where the knight figures out how to outsmart the dragon without using a sword," she said eagerly, handing me the open volume.

As I began to read aloud, watching the bright, intelligent spark in her blue eyes, I realized how much my entire life had fundamentally shifted.

The eviction notice on my old apartment door, the meager $8.37 in my bank account, and the terrifying shadow of my failing health were all ghosts of a life that belonged to someone else.

A soft knock sounded at the open bedroom door, and Dominic leaned against the frame, watching us with a quiet, satisfied smile on his face.

"Dr. Sterling just cleared her for light walking in the gardens this afternoon," Dominic said, stepping into the room.

"Can Arthur come too?" Lily asked quickly, looking between us with hopeful eyes.

"Only if he promises to keep up with your pace," Dominic chuckled, walking over and placing a sealed medical folder on the bedside table.

I picked it up, raising an eyebrow. "What's this?"

"Your surgical clearance," Dominic said simply. "The cardiology team at the private clinic downtown is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Everything is paid in full, and I've already assigned two of my best men to secure your recovery suite."

I stared at the paperwork, feeling a sudden lump rise in my throat that had nothing to do with my medical condition.

"Thank you, Dominic," I said quietly, meaning every single word.

"Don't thank me yet," Dominic replied, offering a rare, genuine smile. "You still have to beat Lily at chess this afternoon, and she plays ruthlessly dirty."

"Hey! I play fair!" Lily protested playfully, crossing her arms with a mock scowl that made both of us laugh out loud.

The dark storm that had threatened to tear our lives apart had finally passed, leaving behind a fragile, hard-fought peace that felt unbreakable.

I wasn't just an ex-accountant running from an eviction notice anymore.

I was part of this strange, dangerous family, bound to them by blood, loyalty, and a rainy night in a Chicago alley that had changed the course of our lives forever.
