Chapter 12 - The Last Alarm

The autumn wind blew cold off the East Coast harbor, rattling the windowpanes of Ridgeport Memorial Hospital as Delaney clocked in for her midnight shift. The emergency department was quiet, bathed in the soft, steady hum of monitors and the muffled rustle of chart pages turning at the nurse's station.

Bernardet Quill looked up from the central desk as Delaney walked past in her crisp, freshly pressed green scrubs, her shoes stepping evenly without a single tired click at the heel.

"Quiet night so far," Bernardet observed, sliding a fresh stack of intake forms across the counter. "No fires, no exploding oxygen lines, no mysterious mafia bosses showing up in town cars."

"Good," Delaney said, picking up a pen and writing her initials at the bottom of the first chart with a quick, firm hand that didn't show the slightest tremor. "Quiet is exactly what we signed up for."

Outside the large glass windows of the emergency ward, the lights of Ridgeport Harbor twinkled across the dark water like a field of fallen stars, steady and unbroken. The ships moved through the channel on schedule, the cranes on Pier 6 turned in smooth, silent arcs against the night sky, and deep within the newly reinforced walls of the medical wing, every valve, pipe, and seal held fast under the pressure of a city that had finally learned how to breathe.

Delaney clipped her badge to her pocket, checked the serial number on the nearest infusion pump with a quick, instinctive glance, and walked down the corridor toward her first patient of the night, leaving the past behind her in the ashes where it belonged.
