Chapter 6 - The Price of Silence

Richard Vance stepped into the harsh fluorescent light of the warehouse, his tailored charcoal suit completely out of place amid the rust and dust, yet his stride radiated absolute, unchecked power.
“Put the wrench down, Mark,” Richard said calmly, gesturing slightly to the guards behind him, who immediately raised their sidearms, training their black barrels directly at my chest. “You’re playing a game you don't understand, with pieces you can't control.”
I tightened my grip on the heavy steel tool, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs while Lily whimpered softly behind me, clutching the hem of Sarah’s sweater.
“The game is over, Richard,” I said, keeping my voice steady. “We know about the stolen patents. We know about the boat explosion eight years ago. And we know that everything our holding company owns was built on embezzlement and murder.”
Richard let out a soft, patronizing chuckle, shaking his head as if he were listening to a child recount a fairy tale.
“Murder? Good grief, Mark, your imagination has always been entirely too dramatic,” Richard smiled coldly, taking another slow step forward. “Arthur didn't drown because of a bomb; he staged his own disappearance because his tech startup was facing imminent bankruptcy, and he needed a way to wipe out his debts without facing federal indictment. Your father simply capitalized on the vacuum he left behind.”
Arthur stepped out from behind the workbench, his face contorted with fury.
“You lying bastard,” Arthur roared, taking a step toward Richard before one of the armed guards stepped forward and pressed the barrel of his gun against Arthur’s shoulder. “You forged my signature on the asset transfer documents three days before the boat blew up!”
“Prove it, Arthur,” Richard replied smoothly, not even blinking at the accusation. “Without the original physical master drives—which were conveniently destroyed in the fire—your word against a multi-billion-dollar corporation is worth less than the dust on this floor.”
I glanced sideways at the laptop resting on the workbench.
The encrypted backup Arthur had just handed me wasn't just a digital copy; it was the master drive, hidden away in a secondary partition that Richard didn't even know existed.
“He doesn't need paper proof, Richard,” I said loudly, stepping slightly to the left to block Richard’s line of sight toward the workbench. “Because every single transaction, every forged signature, and every shell company was automatically mirrored to an off-site cloud server that uploaded its final sync thirty seconds ago to the Department of Justice.”
Richard’s confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his eyes darting sharply toward me.
“You’re bluffing,” Richard snapped, losing a fraction of his cool exterior.
“Am I?” I challenged, pulling my phone out of my pocket with my free hand and holding it up. “Federal investigators received the complete package at 11:42 AM. By the time your security team arrived here, federal marshals were already freezing our corporate accounts and executing search warrants at the downtown headquarters.”

Richard’s face hardened into a mask of pure malice.
“Grab him,” Richard ordered his guards, pointing directly at me. “Take the laptop, take the old man, and make sure none of them leave this building alive.”
