Chapter 9 - The Crossfire

The chaos at Pier 44 was an absolute sensory overload of blinding searchlights, deafening gunfire, and the sharp, chemical stench of gunpowder mixing with the heavy rain. Emma huddled behind the reinforced engine block of the transport van, her knuckles whitening as she gripped her steel trauma kit. Bullets whined off the metal chassis above her head, sending hot sparks showering down onto her jacket.

"Clear the flank!" Marcus's voice roared over the din of automatic gunfire, cutting through the storm.

Across the wet asphalt, a heavy flash of muzzle fire illuminated the loading docks. Through the driving rain, Emma saw Dante moving with ruthless, terrifying efficiency, returning fire with one hand while keeping his injured shoulder pinned tight against his body.

Suddenly, a sharp, suppressed gasp cut through the air, followed by a heavy thud against the pavement just ten feet away from her van.

One of Dante’s men—a young guard Emma had seen eating breakfast in the kitchen that morning—collapsed onto the wet ground, clutching his stomach as a dark crimson stain began to spread rapidly across his tactical vest.

Emma’s medical training instantly overrode her sheer terror. She didn't think; she moved.

Abandoning the relative safety of the engine block, Emma scrambled across the open pavement, sliding on her knees through the puddles straight toward the fallen man.

"Hold your fire! Medic!" Emma screamed at the top of her lungs, waving a gloved hand in the air as federal agents shouted cross-commands from the shadows of the shipping containers.

A stray bullet punched a hole through the metal siding a foot above her head, but she didn't flinch. She reached the wounded guard, tearing open her trauma kit with frantic, practiced fingers. The entry wound in his abdomen was severe—arterial bleeding, bubbling dark red.

"Stay with me, look at my eyes," Emma commanded, pressing a thick pad of sterile gauze directly into the wound with all her weight.

"Doc... get back..." the young man choked out, blood foaming at the corners of his mouth.

"Shut up and breathe," Emma snapped, her hands working mechanically as she pulled out a hemostatic dressing and packed the cavity.

Suddenly, a heavy shadow loomed over her. Dante appeared beside her out of the rain, firing a controlled burst toward a shadowy figure hiding behind a forklift, then dropping down onto one knee to shield her with his own body.

"Is he going to make it?" Dante demanded, his voice dangerously harsh over the sound of approaching sirens wailing in the distance.

"If you stop getting shot long enough for me to finish packing this wound, yes!" Emma yelled back, her face splattered with mud and rain and blood. "Get pressure on this gauze while I prep the chest seal!"

Without a second hesitation, Dante reached out with his good hand, pressing his heavy palm directly over the gauze, holding the life inside the young man's body with the exact same hands that commanded a criminal empire.

"He holds, or we all burn," Dante muttered, his eyes locked onto Emma’s with fierce intensity.

From the shadows of the main warehouse, a sudden flash of light signaled the approach of federal tactical teams closing in from the perimeter. The raid was failing for the feds; their element of surprise had evaporated the moment Dante's private security force had turned the docks into a killing floor.

"We have thirty seconds before the FBI armored vehicles breach the gate!" Marcus shouted, sprinting back toward them. "Boss, we have to move now!"

Dante looked down at the wounded guard, then up at Emma, whose hands were slick with blood.

"Can he travel?" Dante asked.

"If we move him now, the internal bleeding will restart," Emma said fiercely. "We need a sterile field and an operating table, not the back of a truck!"

Dante didn't hesitate. He looked at Marcus. "Get the private ambulance from the secondary manifest. Load him, load her, and get back to the estate. I'll hold the rearguard."

"You're not staying here with an unhealed gunshot wound!" Emma protested, grabbing the lapel of his tactical vest.

"I built this empire, Emma," Dante said, his slate eyes softening for a fraction of a second amidst the roaring storm. "And I'm the only one who can burn it down on our terms. Get in the truck."
