Chapter 6 - Shadows and Reckoning

Rain poured heavily against my windshield as I drove through the storm toward the downtown diner.

The streets were dark, slick, and dangerous.

When I pulled into the parking lot of the diner, I saw Sarah sitting in a corner booth near the back, clutching a small black bag to her chest like a lifeline.

I rushed inside, shaking the water from my coat.

"Sarah," I said, sitting opposite her. "Are you alright?"

She was shaking uncontrollably, her eyes wide with terror.

"She called me ten minutes ago, Claire. She said if I gave you that drive, she'd ruin my life. She said she knows people in the police."

"She can't touch you," I promised, taking her cold hands in mine. "I am a prosecutor for this district. If she threatens you, that's witness tampering and obstruction of justice—both felony offenses. I will personally ensure you are protected."

Sarah reached into her bag and pulled out a small silver USB flash drive.

"It's all here," she whispered. "The full video from the living room camera on the night of July 14th. It shows everything. Vanessa initiated the attack. Your brother stood by the door and watched."

I squeezed the flash drive tightly in my palm. The metal felt ice-cold against my skin.

"Thank you, Sarah. You just saved my mother's life."

Suddenly, the front door of the diner burst open.

Two men in dark raincoats walked in, scanning the room until their eyes locked on our booth.

I instantly recognized one of them—it was Vanessa’s personal driver and head of security, a man named Knox who had a prior criminal record for intimidation.

"Claire," Sarah gasped, shrinking back in fear. "They followed me!"

I stood up slowly, putting the flash drive inside my inner coat pocket and zipping it securely.

Knox approached our table with a heavy, menacing posture.

"Miss Claire," Knox said in a low, rough voice. "Mrs. Vanessa asked us to retrieve some property that belongs to her company."

"This diner has four security cameras, Knox," I said, pointing up at the corners of the ceiling. "And you are currently harassing an officer of the court. Turn around and walk out, or you won't make it to tomorrow's hearing."

Knox grinned wickedly, stepping closer. "You think a badge protects you in the dark, prosecutor?"

Before he could take another step, the diner's back door opened, and Detective Marcus Vance walked in alongside two uniformed officers.

"No," Marcus said, drawing his weapon and pointing it directly at Knox. "But a weapon and three officers certainly do. Hands on the table, Knox. Now!"

Knox’s smile vanished instantly. He raised his hands slowly as the officers moved in to handcuff him.

I looked at Marcus and nodded in gratitude.

"You came just in time," I said.

"You called me ten minutes ago, Claire," Marcus smiled thinly. "I always keep my promises. Do you have the evidence?"

May you like

I held up the silver flash drive.

"Tomorrow morning, court is in session."
