Chapter 4 - The Voice from the Grave

With Thomas sitting beside me and the girls safely asleep upstairs, I broke the wax seal on Rose's final envelope.

Inside were three things: a flash drive, a certified document from an independent toxicology lab, and a legal dossier drafted by one of the most ruthless estate lawyers in Georgia—a woman I didn't even know Rose had hired.

We plugged the flash drive into my laptop. A video file appeared. I clicked play, and suddenly, my daughter's face filled the screen. She looked frail, her cheekbones sharp and her eyes tired, but there was a fierce, burning light in her expression.

"Dad. If you are watching this, it means I am gone. And it means Arthur has finally made his move," Rose's recorded voice filled the quiet room, breaking my heart all over again. "I'm so sorry to leave the girls with you like this. But I needed to protect them. Arthur thinks I'm stupid. He thinks I haven't noticed the missing money, the changed pills, the smell of another woman's perfume on his coats."

She paused, taking a labored breath.

"I knew he was trying to kill me, Dad. You're probably wondering why I didn't just leave, or go to the police. But Arthur is cunning. If I just accused him, he would have dragged out a divorce, fought for custody of the girls just to spite me, and found a way to hide the assets. I had to let him think he was winning. I had to secure the girls' future unconditionally."

Thomas leaned closer to the screen, his eyes wide.

"Included in this envelope is a toxicology report," Rose continued. "Two months ago, I started pretending to swallow the pills he gave me. I hid them. I had a private lab test them. They aren't heart medication, Dad. They are placebos and mild sedatives. He swapped my life-saving medication. The lab report proves it, matched with his signature from the pharmacy pickups."

I picked up the lab report from the desk. There it was in black and white. Irrefutable proof of his tampering.

"But the best part," Rose said, a sad, victorious smile crossing her pale lips, "is the legal dossier. Arthur thinks the life insurance policy defaults to him as my spouse. He also thinks the Savannah house is in my name, making him the sole heir. What he doesn't know is that three months ago, I transferred the deed of the house, my entire savings, and the sole beneficiary status of the life insurance into an irrevocable trust for Lucy, Rachel, and April."

Thomas let out a loud, astonished laugh. "She outsmarted him. She completely outsmarted him."

"You are the executor of the trust, Dad," Rose concluded, a tear finally escaping her eye. "Arthur gets nothing. Zero. He is completely bankrupt. Wait until he is at his most arrogant. Wait until he thinks he has it all. Then, take everything from him. Protect my babies, Dad. I love you."

The screen went black. I sat in silence, tears streaming down my face. My beautiful, brilliant daughter had sacrificed her final days, enduring the knowledge of her husband's lethal betrayal, to meticulously build a fortress around her children.

She had handed me the sword. Now, it was my turn to swing it.

"When is the wedding?" I asked Thomas, my voice dangerously calm.

Thomas checked his notes. "September 15th. Three weeks from Saturday. At the Grand Magnolia Country Club. Very exclusive. Very expensive."

"Arthur thinks I'm signing over the house tomorrow," I said, looking at the fraudulent papers the courier had dropped off earlier. "Let's send him back forged signatures. Let him take out more loans. Let him pay for the caviar and the champagne. We are going to let him walk right up to the altar."
