Chapter 7 - Untangling the Web

The weeks that followed were a whirlwind of legal proceedings, press conferences, and brutal interrogations.
The story of the "Resurrected Widow" dominated global headlines. Adrian’s empire collapsed overnight. Without the infusion of my trust fund, his real-estate company immediately filed for bankruptcy. The federal government seized his assets, freezing every bank account he and Celeste had tried to hide.
Adrian tried every tactic in the book. He hired the most expensive defense attorneys left who would take his case. He tried to plead temporary insanity. When that failed, he tried to pin the entire murder plot and financial fraud on Celeste.
But Celeste was faster, and far more ruthless when cornered.
She handed over thousands of emails, text messages, and encrypted files detailing Adrian’s embezzlement scheme and his premeditated plan to murder me. She detailed how he had researched the cliff, how he had bought the sedative on the black market, and how they had rehearsed their reactions for the police.
Despite her cooperation, the judge showed her no mercy. She was sentenced to fifteen years for conspiracy to commit murder and financial fraud.
Adrian’s trial was swift and merciless.
I took the stand on the final day. I wore the same black suit I had worn to the funeral. I looked him dead in the eye as I recounted the years of psychological abuse, the gaslighting, and finally, the night he tried to kill me.
He couldn't look at me. The arrogant, towering man I had married was reduced to a hollow, graying shell sitting at the defense table.
The jury deliberated for less than three hours. Guilty on all counts. Attempted murder. Aggravated fraud. Embezzlement.
The judge sentenced Adrian Vale to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole.

When the gavel fell, I didn't cheer. I didn't cry. I simply stood up, linked my arm through my father’s, and walked out of the courtroom into the bright sunlight.
The battle was over. Now, I had to figure out how to live again.
