Chapter 6 - The Vultures Circle

I collapsed into my armchair, gasping for air as the magnitude of Thomas's deception washed over me. He hadn't just loved me; he had obsessed over me. He had manipulated my poverty, orchestrated my desperation, all to reel me back to his deathbed. Arthur Pendelton stood quietly, watching my horror turn into a simmering, complex fury. "He trapped you in marriage to legally shield his assets from his brother," Arthur explained calmly. "Marcus Harrison is a dangerous man. He bankrupted his own family, ruined businesses, and has been waiting for Thomas to die for twenty years." Arthur poured me a glass of water, his eyes full of grim pity. "Thomas knew that if he left the money to a charity, Marcus would tie it up in court for decades. But leaving it to a legal spouse? A wife? It is ironclad." "He used me as a human shield," I whispered, staring at the billions of dollars resting on my cheap coffee table. "He used you," Arthur corrected gently, "because you are the only person he trusted to be stronger than Marcus. You are the girl who walked away to get an education. He believed in your brilliant mind." Before I could process the gravity of this immense, twisted love, heavy footsteps pounded up my apartment stairs. My front door was violently kicked open, the wood splintering inward. A tall, broad man in his sixties strode into my living room, flanked by two menacing men in suits. He had Thomas’s jawline, but none of the kindness in his eyes. This was Marcus. "You pathetic, gold-digging nurse," Marcus snarled, his eyes fixed on the mahogany box. "Did you really think my brother could marry a decrepit old woman on his deathbed and steal my birthright?" I stood up, my knees trembling, but I forced my spine to straighten. Marcus stepped into my space, his breath smelling of expensive scotch and raw malice. "I will contest this will. I will drag your name through the mud. I will ruin you until you are begging to die in the gutter!" he roared. I looked at the box, at the photos of my struggles, at the proof of Thomas’s maddening, protective obsession. The fear in my chest suddenly dissolved, replaced by a cold, burning resolve.
