Chapter 6 - The Doorway to Reality

Ethan reached the heavy double doors of the foyer, clearly expecting a delivery driver or a lost neighbor. He yanked the handle with an irritated sigh and pulled the door open.
The words of complaint died instantly in his throat.
Instead of a delivery driver, two uniformed police officers stood on the porch, their hands resting cautiously near their utility belts.
Beside them stood a woman in an immaculate charcoal suit, clutching a leather briefcase. Behind her, a locksmith with a heavy tool bag and a massive man wearing a private security uniform waited silently.
The woman stepped forward, her sharp heels clicking against the marble entryway.
“Mr. Vance?” Attorney Sophia Sterling asked. It wasn't a question; it was an identification target.
“Yes?” Ethan stammered, his bravado rapidly evaporating. “Can I help you officers?”
“I’m Attorney Sophia Sterling,” she said, her voice cutting through the evening air like a blade. “We represent Mrs. Clara Brooks and the Brooks Family Property Trust.”
For the first time all evening, Ethan’s face lost its absolute certainty. The color drained from his cheeks.
Hearing the commotion, Victoria shoved her chair back and marched into the foyer, Natalie trailing nervously behind her.
Victoria shoved past Ethan, glaring at the police officers.
“What is this nonsense?” she demanded. “Who are these people, Ethan?”
Sophia didn't even look at Victoria. She walked straight past Ethan, stepping into the foyer without lifting her voice, commanding the space purely with her presence.
“This property belongs solely to the trust created by Mrs. Brooks’ late father,” Sophia announced, pulling a thick stack of legal documents from her briefcase. “Ethan Vance has no ownership interest, no tenancy rights, and absolutely no legal authority to refinance, transfer, or encumber it.”
Natalie scoffed, crossing her arms defensively. “He is her husband! Half of this is his!”
“Yes,” Sophia said, turning her piercing gaze toward Natalie. “He is her husband. But he is not her landlord. He is not her trustee. And he is certainly not her owner.”
Ethan spun toward the dining room. I was still seated at the head of the table, perfectly calm, watching the destruction unfold.
“What did you do?” Ethan roared, taking a step toward me, his fists clenching.
The two police officers instantly stepped through the doorway, hands moving to their radios. “Sir, step back from her right now,” the taller officer commanded.
I didn't flinch. I didn't move.
“I stopped protecting you,” I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent house.
Sophia handed the top document to Ethan.

“This is an emergency protective order signed by Judge Higgins,” Sophia stated coldly. “Due to the severe domestic violence incident that occurred on Tuesday, resulting in a fractured limb, you are hereby ordered to vacate this premises immediately. You have ten minutes to pack a single bag of essentials under police supervision.”
Ethan stared at the paper as if it were written in an alien language. The empire he thought he had conquered was crumbling before his eyes.
