Chapter 4 - The Steel Trap

Priya didn't hesitate.

With a swift, practiced movement, she slammed her hand down on the red emergency button mounted on the wall beneath the ultrasound monitor.

At the exact same instant, the heavy oak door of the examination room burst inward.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!"

Four Homeland Security Investigations agents in tactical vests, their weapons drawn and shields forward, flooded into the room.

Daniel, caught mid-lunge, spun around, his face twisted in disbelief. "What is the meaning of this? Get out of my hospital! I am the Director! I will have all of your badges!"

The lead agent, a tall, imposing man named Agent Ruiz, didn't argue.

He closed the distance in a fraction of a second, grabbed Daniel’s arm, and drove him face-first onto the polished, sterile tile floor.

The sound of Daniel’s cheek hitting the marble was a wet, heavy slap.

"Dr. Daniel Voss, you are under arrest," Ruiz said, his voice echoing off the walls as he violently pulled Daniel’s arms behind his back, clicking the heavy steel handcuffs into place.

"For what?" Daniel screamed, his cheek pressed flat against the floor, his silver hair falling into his eyes. "You have nothing on me! This is a medical facility! You can't do this!"

"You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, customs violations, money laundering, obstruction of justice, and trafficking in unlawfully obtained human tissue," Ruiz read from a card, his knee planted firmly in Daniel’s back. "You have the right to remain silent..."

Daniel twisted his neck, his eyes wild and bloodshot, searching the room until they landed on me. "You planned this! You set me up! You bitch!"

"No, Daniel," I said, looking down at him with the same indifference I would show to a broken piece of office equipment. "You planned this. You planned it every single time you kicked my daughter. You planned it every time you forged a medical record, imported a counterfeit valve, or believed your wealth made you immune to the law. You built your own gallows. I merely pulled the lever."

"Claire!" Daniel hissed, spit flying from his lips as he looked at his wife on the table. "Tell them! Tell them your mother is crazy! Tell them you fell down the stairs! If you don't back me up, you'll have nothing! I'll strip you of every dime! You'll be a single mother living in the dirt!"

Claire was shaking, her hands clutching her pregnant belly, her face pale as a ghost.

I walked over to the side of the examination table, putting my arms around her shoulders, shielding her from his toxic gaze.

"You don't have to say a word to him, Claire," I whispered. "It's over."

But Claire didn't close her eyes.

She looked down at the man who had terrorized her, who had made her feel small, who had threatened to murder her on an operating table while she was giving birth to their child.

Priya, still standing by the machine, quietly turned the ultrasound monitor toward Claire.

The room was filled once more with the steady, strong, defiant beat of our baby girl’s heart.

Thump-thump, thump-thump, thump-thump.

The sound seemed to give Claire a strength she hadn’t possessed in years.

She stopped shaking. She looked directly into Daniel’s eyes.

"My mother isn't confused, Daniel," she said, her voice steady and clear. "And I didn't fall."

Agent Ruiz lifted Daniel off the floor by his collar.

The great Dr. Daniel Voss, television philanthropist and prince of medicine, was led out of his own VIP clinic in handcuffs, his trousers covered in dust, his face smeared with grease from the floor, and his eyes filled with naked, impotent hatred.

As the heavy doors closed behind him, my phone vibrated once more.

A message from the Halcyon trustees: RECEIVERSHIP COMPLETED. ALL OPERATIONS TRANSFERRED. ST. GABRIEL MEDICAL GROUP IS SECURED.

I looked at the closed door, then back at my daughter.

"Let's get you to a real hospital, sweetheart," I said. "One where the doctors actually care about saving lives."
