Chapter 2 - THE SILVER PROMISE

The afternoon sun beat down through the pharmacy windows the next day as I meticulously counted blue pills into an orange vial. The heavy bell above the front door chimed, cutting through the low hum of the fluorescent lights.

Dominic Russo walked down the narrow aisle, clad in a razor-sharp black suit that commanded absolute obedience, while two silent bodyguards waited outside the glass doors. Within seconds, the three customers browsing the cough medicine aisle suddenly remembered urgent errands elsewhere and hurried out.

“You're scaring my customers,” I muttered, slapping a prescription label onto a bottle.

“They'll survive,” Dominic said, stopping just inches from the counter. His expression had hardened into something cold and jagged. “Gemma's phone has been off since midnight.”

My stomach twisted into a knot of pure dread. “She didn't answer you?”

“She didn't answer anyone.”

I instinctively reached for my worn wool coat hanging on the back hook. “My manager—”

“Already approved,” he interrupted smoothly.

I glanced toward the open door of the back office, where Gary, my usually stern manager, gave me a panicked, frantic nod from behind his desk. I hated how effortlessly Dominic bent the world to his whim, rewriting reality with a single word.

Outside the curb, a tinted black SUV idled with its engine humming. Every survival instinct wired into my brain screamed at me to turn around and run back inside. Men like Dominic were the exact blueprint of the monsters my mother had trusted, the precise danger I had spent my entire youth avoiding.

He noticed the hesitation freezing my feet to the pavement. Instead of barking a command or grabbing my arm, he looked straight into my eyes with an unsettling intensity.

“I won't let anything happen to you,” he said, his voice dropping an octave.

There was zero arrogance in his tone, only absolute, chilling certainty.

“Because if Gemma ran,” he continued softly, “she would run to the one person she's always trusted.”

Defeated by my own loyalty, I opened the door and climbed into the plush leather interior of the SUV. The heavy door thudged shut, sealing me inside his world. Without a word, Dominic reached into his breast pocket and handed me a small, crushed velvet jewelry box.

Confused and trembling slightly, I popped the clasp and lifted the lid. Inside sat the delicate, scratched silver promise ring Gemma had worn every single day since we graduated high school, abandoned in a place she should have never left.
