Chapter 4 - Confrontation and Confession

Sawyer stepped closer, his shadow falling over her. "Gracie heard you screaming her name. She was terrified. And my sister just found the birth certificate in your jewelry box. You had a daughter, Carolina. You had a daughter ten years ago, and you gave her away."

Carolina covered her mouth with her hand, a sob finally escaping her throat. She sank onto a waiting room bench, burying her face in her hands.

"My mother forced me," Carolina sobbed, her voice cracking with a decade of suppressed pain. "I was young, I was unmarried, and Bonnie said a child out of wedlock would ruin our family's social standing. She told me I would never find a good husband, that my life would be over. She arranged the adoption. She made me sign the papers."

"So you hid it from me?" Sawyer asked, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and disbelief. "For nine years of marriage, you never thought to tell me you had another child?"

"I was terrified you would leave me!" she cried, looking up at him with tear-stained eyes. "I wanted to forget her, Sawyer! I wanted to pretend it never happened. But then... then we had Gracie."

She let out a ragged breath, shaking her head.

"Every time I looked at Gracie, all I could see was the daughter I gave away. When Gracie was a baby, every milestone she hit just reminded me of what I had missed with Fernanda. The guilt was eating me alive. And when you left for your business trips, leaving me alone with her... the walls of this house started closing in. Every time Gracie cried, or spilled something, or acted like a normal child, I just... I snapped. I felt like I was being punished by God. I took all my anger, all my grief, and I put it on her. I’m so sorry, Sawyer. I didn't mean to hurt her. I just lost control."

Sawyer looked at the woman he had loved, the woman he had built a life with, and felt a profound sense of pity—but absolutely no forgiveness.

"Your grief is a tragedy, Carolina," Sawyer said, his voice firm and unwavering. "But what you did to Gracie is an atrocity. You turned your own unresolved trauma into a weapon and used it against an innocent eight-year-old girl who did nothing but love you. You made her believe she was destroying this family."

"I can change," Carolina pleaded, reaching out to grab his sleeve. "I'll go to therapy. We can fix this. Please don't take her away from me."

Sawyer gently but firmly pulled his arm away from her grasp.

"It's too late for that," he said. "You chose to protect your secret over protecting your daughter. Now, my only job is to protect her from you."

He turned his back on her and walked back into Gracie's hospital room, closing the door behind him and locking it, shutting Carolina out of their lives for good.
