Chapter 4 - The Walls Begin to Crumble

By Wednesday morning, news of Charles Baldwin’s arrest had spread across the business community of Syracuse like wildfire.

The Baldwin name, once associated with legacy regional transport, was splashed across local newspapers and online news feeds.

Headlines blared the sordid details: Prominent Syracuse Executive Arrested for Brutal Assault on Pregnant Daughter Outside Suburban Estate.

The security camera footage from my front porch had been leaked to the press by an anonymous source within the county administration.

The video was horrifyingly clear.

It showed Charles grabbing my hair, Courtney laughing on the threshold, and my body hitting the concrete as I cradled my pregnant belly.

Within three hours of being uploaded, the clip had accumulated millions of views across social media platforms.

Public outrage was deafening and immediate.

Protesters gathered outside the Baldwin Group corporate headquarters downtown, holding signs demanding maximum sentencing.

Inside Crouse Hospital, two armed private security guards hired by Samantha stood watch outside my room door.

I sat propped up in bed, feeding little Lucas with a bottle while watching the television mounted on the wall.

The screen showed Courtney being escorted into the courthouse for her preliminary hearing.

She looked completely shattered, her designer clothes rumpled and stained, her hair disheveled without her extensions and styling products.

She kept pulling her jacket over her face, weeping hysterically as reporters shouted questions at her.

“Courtney! Did you know Victoria was in labor when you laughed at her?”

“How much money did Charles promise you from the estate liquidation?”

She stumbled into the courtroom without answering, vanishing behind heavy mahogany doors.

A knock sounded at my door, and Samantha Vance stepped into the room, followed by a middle-aged woman with sharp, observant eyes.

“Victoria, this is Detective Laura Ramos from the Syracuse Police Department Financial Crimes Unit,” Samantha introduced.

Detective Ramos pulled a chair forward, taking out a small digital voice recorder and placing it on the bedside table.

“Mrs. Gallagher, first let me congratulate you on the birth of your son,” Detective Ramos began gently.

“Thank you, Detective,” I replied, shifting Lucas to burp him against my shoulder.

“I need to ask you several questions regarding the private documents retrieved from your residence yesterday afternoon,” Ramos said.

“When our forensic team executed the search warrant on your home following the assault, they recovered a shredder in the guest bedroom.”

“Charles had already fed sixty-two pages of company documents through the blades before the deputies stopped him.”

My heart skipped a beat.

“What was he trying to destroy?”

Detective Ramos looked at Samantha, who nodded quietly before opening her portfolio.

“He was attempting to destroy the original partnership buyout agreement from five years ago,” Ramos explained.

“Lucas didn't just buy forty percent of Baldwin-Gallagher Logistics, Victoria.”

“He purchased sixty percent with a specific forfeiture clause.”

“The clause stated that if Charles Baldwin ever engaged in moral turpitude or attempted unauthorized financial encumbrance of the company, his remaining forty percent would be automatically forfeited to the majority shareholder at zero compensation.”

The room fell completely silent, save for the soft breathing of my newborn son.

“Zero compensation?” I asked, astonished.

“Zero,” Samantha confirmed firmly.

“Lucas knew your father’s true nature better than anyone.”

“He knew Charles was an unrepentant narcissist who would eventually turn against his own family to save himself.”

“When Charles forged Lucas’s signature on the four-million-dollar offshore loan, he triggered that exact forfeiture clause.”

“As of midnight yesterday, Charles Baldwin does not own a single share of Baldwin-Gallagher Logistics.”

“You are now the sole, one-hundred-percent owner of the entire commercial operation.”

A cold chill of realization swept through me.

Charles had spent his entire life obsessing over his status as a logistics tycoon.

He had discarded my mother, married a twenty-four-year-old trophy wife, and assaulted me all to protect his empire.

And now, by his own violent and fraudulent actions, every single brick of that empire belonged entirely to me.

“What about the offshore syndicate, Samantha?” I asked.

“The four-million-dollar debt he tried to pin on Lucas?”

Samantha leaned forward, her eyes narrowing with sharp legal precision.

“The syndicate’s legal counsel contacted my office three hours ago.”

“When they saw the arrest report and the forfeiture documentation, they realized Charles had defrauded them using invalid corporate authority.”

“They have recalled the entire loan immediately, freezing Charles’s personal real estate holdings, his luxury vehicles, and his private pension fund.”

“Charles is completely wiped out, Victoria.”

“He has no money to hire private defense attorneys.”

“By tomorrow morning, his high-priced corporate lawyers will officially withdraw from his defense due to non-payment.”

A wave of vindication washed over me, but the emotional scars of the past twenty-four hours still burned deep.

“What will happen to Courtney?” I asked.

Detective Ramos clicked her pen, taking a quick note in her pad.

“Courtney’s public defender contacted the district attorney’s office twenty minutes ago.”

“She is offering full, unreserved testimony against Charles in exchange for a plea deal on misdemeanor trespassing.”

“She claims Charles coerced her into accompanying him to your house to intimidate you into signing the deed.”

A bitter smile touched my lips.

Courtney, who had stood on my threshold laughing while my water broke, was already turning on her older husband the second the money dried up.

Their transactional marriage of convenience had survived less than a day under real pressure.

“Tell the prosecutor no plea deals without prison time, Detective,” I said, my voice firm and uncompromising.

“She stood there and laughed while I was in physical agony.”

“She wanted to watch me suffer.”

“She can spend at least six months in a county jail cell reflecting on how funny that truly was.”

Detective Ramos nodded with quiet respect, clicking off her recorder.

“I will convey your exact words to the district attorney, Mrs. Gallagher.”

“Rest well. You have won this war before they even realized the battle had begun.”
