Chapter 5 - The Bloodline Will

The silence in the room was louder than gunfire.

Elena stared at the legal document on the table, her breath hitching in her throat.

“That’s impossible,” she whispered, her voice barely carrying across the small kitchen.

“My mother was an orphan. She grew up in foster care until Dr. Vance took her in as a ward. She told me her family was dead.”

“They were dead to her,” Marco said, his tone heavy with dread.

“Because thirty years ago, your grandfather—Matteo’s father—had an affair with a concert pianist named Marie Laurent. When Marie gave birth to Clara, your father, Giancarlo, wanted to acknowledge her publicly.”

Marco looked at me, his eyes full of sorrow.

“Your mother was still alive then, Matteo. Beatrice found out about the illegitimate daughter first. She threatened to take the story to the press, destroy the Caruso family name, and trigger a divorce that would have dissolved half the empire.”

“So Giancarlo hid her,” I said, the bitter realization settling into my gut like lead.

“He paid Dr. Vance to take the child. He set up a secret trust that would activate thirty years later, transferring half the family’s primary voting shares to Clara’s direct descendants upon his death.”

“Clara died in a car accident twelve years ago,” Elena whispered, her hands shaking violently.

“Leaving you,” Marco said. “And now, leaving Sophie.”

I looked at the little girl on the couch.

She had curled herself into a small ball beneath the oversized coat, her gray Caruso eyes watching the adults with an unnatural, terrifying stillness.

She had lived in freezing walk-ups.

She had eaten plain rice for dinner.

She had patched her own stuffed animal with sewing thread.

All while holding the keys to the largest shipping and real estate fortune on the eastern seaboard.

“Nico didn't run you out of New York because you were an inconvenience to me,” I told Elena, my voice shaking with an anger so profound it made my vision pulse red.

“He ran you out because if you had stayed—if I had married you, or even if we had registered Sophie’s birth certificate with my name—the trust triggers would have automatically fired.”

“The shares,” Elena breathed, the horror finally washing over her.

“The voting majority of Caruso Holdings would have legally passed to you and Sophie,” Marco confirmed.

“Beatrice and Nico would have been reduced to minor minority shareholders. They would have lost their seats on the board. Their private estates. Their entire livelihood.”

Elena stumbled back until her spine hit the kitchen counter.

She looked down at her work-worn hands, scarred from dish soap and harsh chemicals.

“All those nights,” she sobbed, burying her face in her palms.

“All those nights I sat in the dark crying because I couldn't afford new shoes for her. Because the landlord turned off the heat in December. And it was all because of some goddamn paper signed before I was even born?”

I closed the distance between us.

I didn't care if she hated me.

I didn't care if she pulled away.

I wrapped my arms around her shoulders and pulled her against my chest.

She stiffened for a second, a desperate instinct to fight, and then collapsed against me.

Her tears soaked through my shirt, burning against my skin.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered into her hair.

“I’m so sorry, Elena. I should have turned the world upside down until I found you. I should have burned the city to the ground before I let you walk away.”

She didn't answer.

She just gripped my sleeves with white-knuckled intensity, weeping for six years of lost mornings, stolen dignity, and solitary terror.

Across the room, Sal’s radio crackled.

A sharp, static-filled burst broke the emotional dam.

“Sal. We have a problem at the perimeter.”

Sal clicked his lapel mic immediately.

“Report.”

“Two black Suburbans just pulled up to the curb. Nico’s personal security team. They’re armed, Sal. They’re coming up the fire escape and the main stairwell.”

May you like

Sal turned to me, his hand dropping to his service weapon.

“Boss. They tracked Marco’s car.”
