Chapter 9 - The Press Conference Ambush

At two o'clock that afternoon, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was packed to capacity with over two hundred journalists, camera crews, and syndicated news anchors.

Julian Sterling had called an emergency press briefing. The official agenda was announced as a major policy rollout regarding municipal child protection and family welfare reform. But everyone in the press corps knew the real circus had arrived: rumors of a criminal raid at Caleb Hart’s high-rise had been circulating across local newsrooms since noon.

Julian Sterling stood behind the polished mahogany podium. He was fifty-two years old, tall, sporting silver-tipped hair, an expensive charcoal suit, and a pristine American flag lapel pin. His face wore the practiced, sorrowful gravity of a statesman mourning a tragedy.

Beside him stood Frank Malley, looking polished in a dark civilian suit, alongside two high-ranking political consultants.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Julian began, his resonant, baritone voice echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system. "It is with a heavy heart that I address you today. In our pursuit of public office, we often encounter the tragic breakdowns of our society's safety nets. Earlier today, my legal office was notified of an alarming situation involving a former junior employee of our firm, Ms. Clara Vance, who tragically passed away earlier this week due to severe medical complications following childbirth."

Flashbulbs popped in a continuous, blinding wave. Journalists scribbled furiously on their digital pads.

"Tragically," Julian continued, pausing to let his voice tremble with rehearsed paternal sorrow, "it has come to light that Ms. Vance’s surviving sister, Olivia, has unlawfully removed three newborn infants from medical supervision. Even more troubling are persistent reports that certain wealthy corporate figures in this city—individuals who believe their financial status elevates them above the rule of law—are actively harboring these children and obstructing sworn law enforcement officers from ensuring their immediate clinical safety."

A reporter from the Chicago Tribune raised her hand immediately. "Mr. Sterling! Are you referring to tech executive Caleb Hart? Was a warrant served at his residence this morning?"

Julian held up a solemn hand, offering a sad, forgiving smile. "I will not comment on active criminal referrals. However, I will state unequivocally: no billionaire in Chicago has the right to treat vulnerable orphan infants as personal pawns. We have formally petitioned the Department of Justice to intervene."

Before the next reporter could shout a question, the heavy double oak doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with a concussive bang.

The entire press corps gasped, spinning their camera lenses toward the entrance in unison.

Caleb Hart strode through the doors, flanked by four towering private security agents in dark suits. Beside him walked Arthur Vance, holding a thick leather briefcase.

And between them, dressed in an elegant, tailored navy blazer, her dark hair combed back in dignified simplicity, walked Olivia Vance. She did not look like a frightened cleaner sleeping on a park bench. She held her chin high, her gaze steady, locked directly onto the man standing behind the podium.

The ballroom erupted into pure chaos.

Camera operators scrambled over chairs, microphones were thrust forward in frantic clusters, and shutter clicks sounded like rapid-fire machine guns.

"Is that Caleb Hart?!"

"Who is the woman with him?!"

"Mr. Hart! Are you violating a state custody warrant?!"

Caleb walked straight down the center aisle, his presence radiating such fierce, unyielding gravity that the sea of reporters instinctively parted before him. He stopped ten feet from the stage, looking directly up at Julian Sterling.

Julian’s rehearsed smile vanished. His jaw locked, his knuckles turning dead white as he gripped the edges of the podium. Frank Malley stepped forward on the stage, his hand instinctively twitching toward his jacket, but the cold glare of Caleb’s security team froze him in place.

"You speak eloquently about protecting vulnerable children, Julian," Caleb’s voice rang out across the vast hall, resonant and clear, cutting effortlessly through the clamor without the aid of a microphone. "So why don't you tell this entire press room why your private campaign fund, Citizens for Midwestern Integrity, wired twenty-five thousand dollars to Frank Malley’s enforcement agency seventy-two hours ago to burglarize that deceased woman’s apartment?"

A collective gasp sucked the air out of the ballroom.

Julian’s face flushed an ugly, mottled scarlet. "This is an outrageous disruption! Security! Have these trespassers removed from this private event immediately!"

"This room is booked under a public press credential license filed with the City of Chicago, Julian," Arthur Vance announced loudly, stepping forward and flipping open his leather portfolio. "And you cannot remove the legal guardian of your own biological children."
