Chapter 9 - The Night the Syndicate Learned to Fear the Shadow

Three weeks after the Whitmore Grand gala, the fragile peace between the Hale organization and the Serrano syndicate shattered permanently.

Leonard Pike, believing that Vincent’s new security apparatus was still disorganized after Mason’s firing, made his move. He coordinated a multi-pronged strike against three of Vincent’s primary shipping warehouses along the Chicago River, intending to cripple the logistics network before a midnight board meeting.

Pike sat in his armored Mercedes parked three blocks away from the main warehouse on Canal Street, sipping espresso and waiting for the phone call confirming that Vincent Hale’s empire was burning to the ground.

The phone rang at 11:14 p.m.

Pike answered with a smug smile. "Is it done?"

It wasn't the voice of his lead enforcer on the other end.

It was a woman’s voice. Cool, calm, absolute.

"Mr. Pike," Claire Mercer said through the encrypted receiver.

Pike froze, his smile vanishing instantly. "Who is this? Where is Marcus? Where is the team?"

"Marcus is currently discussing structural engineering with two federal marshals after we handed over their weapons caches," Claire replied smoothly. "And your assault teams at the other two warehouses are currently tied up in zip-ties, waiting for the police department to arrive with warrants that your firm's legal padding won't make disappear."

Before Pike could scream an order into the phone, the heavy bulletproof windows of his Mercedes shattered inward in a synchronized cascade of spiderweb cracks.

Before his two bodyguards in the front seat could even reach for their holstered weapons, the doors of the Mercedes were yanked open with terrifying force.

A slim woman in a charcoal suit leaned into the backseat. Before Leonard Pike could utter another syllable, a cold steel barrel pressed firmly against the center of his forehead.

"Mr. Hale sends his regards," Claire said softly. "And he asked me to remind you that Chicago has enough scavengers already."

Pike stared into her eyes, paralyzed by a terror deeper and colder than anything he had ever felt in federal courtrooms or backroom boardrooms. In that single, frozen second, the powerful corporate attorney realized a fundamental truth that Mason Crowe and the entire Chicago underworld were about to learn the hard way:

The mafia boss hadn't hired a joke. He had hired a storm.
