Chapter 8 - A New Account

Six months later.

The courtroom was warm, filled with the low hum of shifting papers and the whispers of journalists sitting in the back rows.

Daniel sat at the defense table, wearing a plain, state-issued gray jumpsuit. The six months he spent in county jail awaiting trial had taken their toll; his hair was thinning, his shoulders slouched, and the arrogant sneer he used to wear was completely gone.

Richard sat next to him, looking old and frail, his legal team desperately trying to negotiate a plea deal to keep him out of federal prison.

Patricia sat in the public gallery, wearing a cheap coat, her designer bags long since sold to pay their initial retainer fees. When I walked into the room, she looked away, unable to meet my eyes.

The judge cleared his throat, tapping his gavel once.

"In the matter of the State versus Daniel Blackwood and Richard Blackwood, regarding charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, conspiracy, and domestic assault."

The prosecutor stood up, presenting the final plea agreement.

Daniel pled guilty to all charges. He was sentenced to eight years in a federal penitentiary, with a mandatory requirement to pay restitution of 2.1 million dollars to the employee pension fund.

Richard received five years of probation and a massive fine that effectively wiped out his remaining personal assets due to his failing health.

As they led Daniel away in chains, he paused for a brief second by the gallery railing where I stood.

"Claire," he whispered, his voice dry and hollow. "I’m sorry. Please... help my mother. She has nothing left."

I looked at him, the man who had dragged me across a cold floor because he thought I was garbage.

"She should know her place, Daniel," I said softly, repeating the words his mother had spoken with such joy. "And right now, her place is figuring out how to survive without someone else’s money."

He was led through the heavy metal doors, the click of the lock signaling the final chapter of his old life.

An hour later, Maya and I walked out of the courthouse into the bright, warm spring sunshine.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was an email alert from Samuel Ortiz.

The restructuring of Blackwood Manufacturing was complete. The pension fund was fully restored, the employees had received a significant bonus from the recovered funds, and the company’s stock had stabilized under new, transparent leadership.

"So, Madam Chair," Maya smiled, adjusting her sunglasses as we walked toward her car. "What’s the next move?"

I looked up at the sky, feeling the warmth of the sun on my face, the scars on my scalp completely healed, the memory of the fire gone.

"I think I’m going to buy a new dining table," I said, a genuine, free smile finally breaking across my face. "A round one. So everyone who sits there is always equal."
