Chapter 11 - The Dawn of Cold Steel

The first pale rays of dawn filtered through the broken stained-glass windows, illuminating the destruction left by the night’s violence.

A heavy mist rolled off the Hudson River, clinging to the shattered limestone balustrades of the Moretti courtyard.

Paramedics cleared the remaining bodies under the watchful eyes of thirty loyal soldiers wearing tactical body armor.

Inside the grand study, the fireplace crackled quietly, casting long shadows across the dark oak walls.

Luca sat in his father’s leather armchair, his left arm tightly bound in a white medical sling.

The bullet wound through his shoulder had been stitched, but his face remained pale from blood loss and exhaustion.

Beside him stood Luna, wearing a tailored charcoal wool coat over clean black slacks.

Her chapped hands were thoroughly washed, but faint traces of gunpowder remained embedded beneath her fingernails.

She stared down at the large mahogany desk covered in maps of the eastern seaboard and private shipping manifests.

Marco, the newly appointed chief enforcer, stepped into the room and closed the heavy oak door behind him.

“The police commissioners have been paid off through the usual offshore accounts,” Marco reported grimly.

“The public narrative will state that an industrial gas boiler exploded in the estate’s catering kitchen.”

“And the Vulov syndicate?” Luca asked, his voice rough and low.

“Grigori Vulov has called an emergency council meeting of the five northern syndicates in Boston for tonight,” Marco answered.

“He has declared blood revenge for the death of Dmitri Kosoff.”

“He claims the Moretti family violated the sacred neutrality of the bride selection gala.”

“He is offering a five-million-dollar bounty to whichever captain delivers Luna’s head to his docks.”

Luna felt a brief chill crawl down her spine, but she did not drop her gaze from the desk.

The frightened housemaid who had crossed the border in silence had died in the smoke of the kitchen breach.

“Let him place his bounties,” Luca murmured, his green eyes flashing with cold, calculated rage.

“Vincent Torino’s private safe was opened an hour ago in the lower armory.”

Luca tapped a thick leather ledger lying open in front of him.

“Vincent did not just conspire with Dmitri Kosoff; he kept meticulous records of every bribed judge, port official, and fuel contract.”

“Half of Grigori Vulov’s cargo ships operate using forged maritime licenses managed right here in New York.”

Luna stepped closer to the desk, her brown eyes scanning the handwritten codes in the ledger.

During her three years of dusting the study, she had seen Vincent leave those exact receipts inside the grandfather clock.

“Grigori Vulov’s primary weakness is not his soldiers,” Luna said, her voice clear and decisive.

Luca and Marco both looked up, surprised by the firmness in her tone.

“Katarina Vulov runs their offshore accounts through a shell company registered in Panama,” Luna explained calmly.

“Last month, while serving tea during Don Salvatore’s private financial audit, I heard Vincent arguing about the canal tariffs.”

“The entire Vulov fleet is leveraged against three shipments of raw titanium scheduled to dock in Newark tomorrow morning.”

“If those three ships are impounded by federal authorities, Grigori loses eighty million dollars in collateral.”

“His allied captains will abandon him before noon.”

Marco looked at the former maid with newfound shock and quiet respect.

Luca slowly leaned forward, a proud, lethal smile curving his lips.

“She is right,” Luca murmured, resting his uninjured hand over Luna’s fingers on the open ledger.

“We do not need to fight an army in the streets of Manhattan.”

“We will cut off the serpent’s head by bankrupting his empire from the shadows.”
