Chapter 7 - The Domino Effect

With the police already waiting in the lobby, the atmosphere in the executive suite turned from a confrontation into a processing center. The police took statements, seized the laptops, and escorted Marcus out in handcuffs. Vanessa was sobbing, not because of the betrayal, but because she knew the money was gone.
"You can't do this!" Vanessa screamed as they led her toward the elevator. "I’m the mother of these children! Adrian, tell them!"
Adrian didn't even look at her. He was slumped in one of the leather chairs, looking like a man who had aged twenty years in twenty minutes. He realized that the woman he had treated like a servant was now the one holding the keys to his future. Every asset, every credit card, every bank account was tied to the trust that Claire now fully controlled.
Evelyn sat beside her son, but for the first time, she didn't offer him comfort. She looked at Claire, her eyes hollow. "I thought I was saving him," she whispered. "I thought the lie was a mercy."
"A lie is never a mercy, Evelyn," Claire said, looking out at the city skyline. "It’s a debt. And eventually, the interest becomes too high to pay."

The board of directors arrived, their faces grim. Claire presented the audit. She didn't have to say a word. The numbers did the talking. Within an hour, Adrian’s executive title was stripped, his access to the Northstar accounts was permanently revoked, and he was served with criminal complaints for embezzlement and fraud.
As they took Adrian away, he looked up at Claire one last time. There was no anger left in him, only a terrifying, empty shock. He had spent his life thinking he was the player, only to realize he had been the piece being moved across the board all along.
