Chapter 13 - The Flight Through the Tempest

The sound of Lily’s weeping was the only tether pulling Adrian back from the void.

He forced his eyes open, tasting copper and bile at the back of his mouth.

Sarah was already kneeling over him, blood trickling from a small laceration above her left eyebrow, her hands pressing firmly against his chest.

"Adrian! Stay with me! Look at me!" Sarah pleaded, her voice shaking with raw, terrified urgency.

Lily was sitting beside them on the floor, clutching her father’s limp left hand, pressing her small cheek against his calloused knuckles.

"Daddy, don't sleep," Lily whimpered.

"Please don't sleep in the rain."

Adrian drew a long, agonizing breath, the air burning his lungs like lye, but the defibrillator shock had successfully restored sinus rhythm.

"I'm awake, baby," Adrian managed to whisper, squeezing her little fingers with what remained of his strength.

"Daddy's right here."

He looked up at Sarah, nodding toward the shattered entrance.

"Sterling’s outer team heard those shots," Adrian said, pushing himself up onto his elbows despite the screaming protests of his chest.

"They will be at the gate in less than four minutes."

"We can't take the driveway."

"How do we get to the airport?" Sarah asked, helping him haul his weight up against the frame of the sofa.

"The coastal access lane behind the dunes," Adrian answered, wiping a smear of blood from his jaw.

"Vincent left a sanitized four-wheel-drive truck behind the municipal water station two blocks south."

"Take Lily and the bags; I can walk."

Sarah didn't argue; she picked up the duffel bags, swung them over her shoulders, and scooped Lily up in one fluid, desperate motion.

Adrian retrieved his Kimber, picked up Sterling’s dropped 9mm from the floor, and led them through the back deck into the driving rain.

The wind off the Atlantic was blowing at forty knots, whipping sand and freezing water across their faces like needles.

They scrambled down the wooden stairs, cutting through the dense sea oats and wild bayberry bushes that separated the cottages from the road.

Fifty yards ahead, two sets of headlights swept across the main avenue—Sterling’s tactical team was converging on the empty house.

Adrian moved with the agonizing precision of an injured predator, every step sending an ache through his sternum, but his eyes remained sharp.

They reached the rusted municipal water pump station; parked beneath an overhanging corrugated metal roof was a gray Ford Raptor with blackout trim.

Adrian keyed the remote fob, unlocking the doors, and hoisted Lily into the rear child seat, strapping her in with trembling fingers.

"Head down, bug," Adrian commanded gently, kissing her forehead.

"We're going to play the quiet game until we see the airplanes."

"Okay, Daddy," Lily whispered, clutching her yellow drawing pad to her chest like a shield.

Sarah jumped into the passenger seat, immediately racking the slide of Sterling’s recovered pistol and resting it across her knees.

Adrian climbed behind the wheel, hit the ignition button, and the massive twin-turbo V6 engine roared to life with a deep, muffled growl.

He didn't turn on the headlights; he engaged the infrared night-vision display on the dashboard screen and dropped the transmission into gear.

The truck launched through the deep sand, tires biting into the gravel access road as they bypassed the main gate entirely.

Behind them, red and blue emergency flashers appeared in the distance—the Cape May police were finally arriving at the shooting scene.

Adrian steered onto Route 47, keeping his speed at a steady, unsuspicious fifty miles per hour through the blinding tempest.

Beside him, Sarah watched the rearview mirror like a hawk, her knuckles white on the grip of the firearm.

"Are they following?" Sarah asked, her voice tight.

"Sterling’s primary vehicles will be held up by the local sheriff’s roadblock at the junction," Adrian replied, his breathing shallow and rapid.

"Julian doesn't know about the Millville strip."

"He thinks we're heading toward the Garden State Parkway to get back to New York."

Adrian tapped the dashboard touchscreen, opening the encrypted satellite link to Vincent.

"Vincent, we are en route to Millville," Adrian spoke into the vehicle microphone.

"We had contact at the cottage."

"Sterling is down; Julian escaped in a green pickup."

"Understood, Adrian," Vincent responded, the sound of jet engines whining loudly in the background of the call.

"The turboprop is fueled, the flight plan to Bozeman is logged under an agricultural charter, and the tarmac is secure."

"Our heavy team from Newark intercepted two of Sterling’s scouts on the expressway twenty minutes ago."

"They won't be reaching Millville tonight."

"Good," Adrian muttered, feeling another sharp, cold wave of exhaustion lap at the edges of his consciousness.

"Keep the engines running."

Thirty minutes later, the Raptor turned off the rural highway into the private perimeter of the Millville Executive Airport.

Waiting on the rain-slicked asphalt was a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air, its navigation lights blinking rhythmically through the fog.

Vincent stood beneath the wing, wearing a heavy yellow slicker, signaling them toward the hangar apron with an orange wand.

Adrian brought the truck to a halt beside the plane’s boarding stairs, killed the engine, and slumped against the steering wheel.

His vision was graying out entirely; his fingers had lost all sensation, hanging limp against the leather wheel.

"Adrian!" Sarah gasped, dropping her weapon and catching his shoulders before his head hit the horn.

"Vincent! Help him!"

The truck door was yanked open, and Vincent’s strong, scarred hands reached inside, unbuckling Adrian’s belt and pulling him into the cold air.

"I've got him, Sarah," Vincent grunted, hauling Adrian toward the aircraft’s boarding steps.

"Get the girl inside the cabin!"

Lily ran up the aluminum stairs, her red boots clattering against the metal, stopping at the top of the doorway to look down at her father.

Adrian was being carried up the steps between Vincent and the flight mechanic, his head rolling backward, his chest heaving with irregular, shallow gasps.

As they laid him onto the medical berth inside the aircraft’s pressurized cabin, Lily stepped forward and pressed her face against his neck.

"You're not a shadow, Daddy," Lily said, her voice clear and strong over the roar of the warming turboprops.

"Don't turn into a shadow."

Adrian’s eyelids fluttered open, his gray eyes finding her tiny silhouette in the dim cabin lighting.

He reached up, his fingers brushing against her warm cheek, and forced his lungs to draw one more clean breath of air.

"Never again, Lily," Adrian whispered, the plane’s engines spooling into a deafening scream as the door sealed shut.

"I'm staying in the light."
