Chapter 6 - Unearthing the Foundation

The fallout was catastrophic. Adrian had built his empire on a foundation of sand and intimidation, and once the first pillar fell, the rest came crashing down with terrifying speed.

Within forty-eight hours, the audio recordings were leaked to the press. The public reaction was visceral. The abuse was horrifying enough to ruin his social standing, but the theft from the unhoused charity was the fatal blow. The city tore him apart. Protesters gathered outside his corporate headquarters, throwing red paint on the brass plaques bearing his name.

From my quiet apartment, I worked endlessly with the prosecution. I sat in bleak conference rooms under harsh fluorescent lights, surrounded by federal accountants.

"He disguised the transfers as material costs for the Heights Project," I explained to a room full of suits, projecting the ledgers onto a screen. "Look here. He invoiced three million for imported Italian marble, but the vendor doesn't exist. The routing number traces back to a holding company in the Caymans. A company registered under Vanessa Cole’s maiden name."

The lead prosecutor, a sharp-eyed woman named District Attorney Vance, let out a low whistle. "He used the mistress to launder the money."

"He used everyone," I corrected her softly. "But he made sure Vanessa signed the authorization forms. She was so desperate to feel like a partner, she never read what she was signing."

When Vanessa realized she was facing accessory charges and up to fifteen years in federal prison, her loyalty to Adrian evaporated instantly. She turned state’s evidence, trading every secret she knew for a plea deal. She handed over his private emails, his secondary phones, and the keys to safety deposit boxes he had hidden from everyone.

Adrian, meanwhile, was rotting in county jail. His high-priced lawyers abandoned him one by one as his funds dried up. Because the stolen money involved federal grants, the government seized everything. His bank accounts, his stock portfolios, his real estate holdings—all gone.

He was denied bail. The judge, having listened to the recording where Adrian bragged about buying off local politicians, deemed him an extreme flight risk.

Three months later, I received a message from his public defender. Adrian wanted to see me.

Elena advised against it. "He just wants to manipulate you. It’s what abusers do when they lose control."

"He has no control left," I replied. "I need to look him in the eye one last time. As an equal."
