Chapter 4 - THE WHISPER IN THE STATIC

The red glow of the wildlife tracking collar on the mother wolf’s neck seemed to pulse in time with Elena’s own racing pulse. She looked down at the floorboard, where the larger pup had curled itself tightly against the smaller sibling, trying desperately to share its body heat through Lily’s red wool blanket.
"Elena? Elena, are you still there?" the speaker on the phone crackled, the voice of the head researcher returning with a frantic, breathless urgency. "Tell me Miller didn't touch the animals."
"He had a gun," Elena answered, her voice hollow as she stared out the frosted window at the motionless form of the mother wolf. "He was going to kill her. He said something about a bio-marker... something inside her that doesn't belong in nature. What did you people do to her?"
A heavy sigh hissed through the phone line, accompanied by the frantic clacking of computer keys in the background. "Dr. Thomas Vance here. I lead the wildlife containment division out of the Lander research outpost thirty miles north of here. I need you to listen to me, Elena, because your life—and the lives of those animals—is in extreme danger."
"Start talking, Dr. Vance," Elena snapped, her grief finally hardening into an unyielding wall of protective fury. "And make it quick before that man comes back."
"Three weeks ago, our facility was tracking Pack Leader 714 to monitor natural migration patterns near the old industrial reserve," Vance explained rapidly, his voice strained with panic. "What the public—and rogue corporate security contractors like Miller—don't know is that the reserve was contaminated by an illegal corporate dumping site containing an experimental cellular regeneration agent. It was designed to repair spinal damage in mammalian tissue using modified viral vectors."
Elena’s eyes widened as she looked down at the wolf’s paralyzed hind legs, then back to the tracking collar pulsing a rhythmic red light. "She drank from the runoff."
"Worse," Vance corrected grimly. "She ingested it while trying to hunt near the basin. The compound didn't kill her, but it triggered a massive, volatile mutation in her cellular structure. That's why her tracking band is flashing red—it’s broadcasting a high-priority quarantine alert. Miller works for Apex Bio-Tech, the corporation responsible for the spill. They’ve been hunting her across the state because if the EPA or independent researchers verify that the compound successfully regenerated mammalian tissue without toxic rejection, their illegal dumping operation is exposed to federal criminal charges."
"And the pups?" Elena whispered, her breath frosting the inside of the windshield as she looked down at the two tiny creatures shivering on her daughter's blanket. "Are they infected too?"
May you like
A terrifying pause stretched across the phone line before Vance answered. "They were born after the exposure. If the regenerative agent passed through the placenta... they aren't just normal wolves, Elena. They are living proof of a multi-million-dollar corporate crime, and Apex will burn this entire highway to the ground to make sure no one ever sees them."
Before Elena could process the staggering weight of the revelation, a sharp, metallic ping echoed from the roof of her car, followed instantly by the shattering sound of her rear windshield exploding inward into a shower of diamond-like glass.
