Chapter 2 - The Cavalry Arrives

The heavy oak front door didn't just open; it splintered inward with a deafening crash.
Adrian dropped my hair, spinning around just as a team of uniformed officers flooded the hallway. Behind them, stepping over the shattered wood of the doorframe in sharp black stilettos, was Mara. Her eyes, normally warm and full of laughter, were currently the temperature of liquid nitrogen.
“What the hell is this?” Adrian roared, his false bravado immediately rising to the surface. “You can’t just break into my house! I know my rights!”
Mara didn't even look at him. She bypassed Adrian entirely, her gaze locking onto me crumpled on the blood-stained kitchen floor. In an instant, the ruthless lawyer vanished, replaced by the fiercely protective sister who used to bandage my scraped knees when we were children.
“Evie,” she breathed, dropping to her knees beside me, uncaring as the pooling water and blood soaked through her expensive designer trousers. “I've got you, baby girl. The ambulance is right outside.”
“Mara,” I sobbed, the relief washing over me almost as painfully as the physical contractions. “The baby… the baby is coming. And he… he hurt me.”
“I know,” she whispered, brushing the sweat-drenched hair from my forehead. “He’s never going to touch you again. I promise you.”
“Hey! Get away from my wife!” Adrian lunged forward, but two massive police officers intercepted him, slamming him against the granite countertop where Lenora had set out her baking ingredients. The flour puffed into the air like a white cloud, coating his shocked face.
“Officer, this is a misunderstanding!” Lenora shrieked, clutching her silk robe tightly around her chest. “My daughter-in-law is hysterical. She fell! My son is a good man, a respected architect in this community!”
Deputy Chief Thomas Vance—Mara’s husband—stepped into the kitchen. He was a mountain of a man, his presence demanding instant silence. He looked at Adrian, pinned against the flour-covered counter, and then down at his wife comforting me on the floor.
“Adrian Miller,” Thomas said, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. “You are under arrest for domestic battery, aggravated assault on a pregnant woman, and unlawful imprisonment. Read him his rights, boys.”
“You have no proof!” Adrian spat, struggling against the cuffs as they clicked around his wrists. “She's crazy! She's hormonal! It's my word against hers!”
Mara stood up slowly. Paramedics were rushing into the room now, sliding a backboard beneath me, but Mara didn't break eye contact with Adrian. She reached into her tailored blazer and pulled out a thick USB drive.
“Actually, Adrian,” Mara said, her voice dripping with venom. “It's your word against three hundred hours of hidden audio recordings, timestamped photographs of bruises you gave her in December, January, and April, and a comprehensive paper trail showing you financially coercing and isolating her. Oh, and Evie’s attorney—my colleague—has already filed for an emergency restraining order and full custody. You're not just going to jail. You're going to lose everything.”
As the paramedics lifted me onto the stretcher, I saw the exact moment Adrian’s world crumbled. The arrogant smirk vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic.
His father, usually so quick with a cruel joke, stood completely frozen in the corner. “Lenora,” he whispered to his wife. “Call our lawyer.”

“Don't bother,” Mara said coldly to the older couple. “Because as of this morning, Evie also provided me with the ledgers she found in Adrian’s home office. The ones detailing how you three have been funneling money out of his client's escrow accounts to fund your lavish lifestyle. You won't be calling a lawyer. You'll be needing a defense team.”
I was wheeled out the door, the cool morning air hitting my face, carrying the promise of a life I thought I had lost forever.
