Chapter 4 - The Shadow on the Lake

The rain continued through the early hours of the morning, turning the gray expanse of Lake Michigan into a churning sea of black foam.

Claire sat at the cherrywood desk near the tall bay windows, three monitors glowing before her.

Gabriel had not slept.

He had stood by the edge of the desk for four hours, watching her decode the financial labyrinths constructed by Evan Mercer and Vincent Moretti’s shell companies.

Every time Claire pressed an enter key, another layer of betrayal unraveled.

"Moretti wasn't paying them in cash," Claire said, zooming in on an offshore transaction originating from a bank in Panama.

"He was paying them in commercial real estate debt bonds."

"They were planning to seize my mother's warehouse in Gary and convert it into a private distribution depot."

Gabriel leaned over her shoulder, his hand resting on the polished wood of the desk just inches from her elbow.

His presence was imposing, yet strangely steadying.

"They wanted to cut me out of the rail corridor completely," Gabriel noted, his eyes scanning the corporate routing numbers.

"If Moretti secured Gary, he could bottleneck every shipment coming into Cook County from the east."

"And by pinning the theft on you, Evan gave Moretti a completely clean paper trail."

"The police would have arrested you for grand larceny."

"I would have hunted your father down, thinking he was the only one who crossed me."

"And Moretti would have walked in to take over the abandoned Mercer Freight contracts without firing a single shot."

Claire rubbed her tired eyes, feeling the exhaustion settling deep behind her temples.

"They planned this for almost a year," she whispered, her voice tinged with a fresh wave of disbelief.

"My own brother."

"He sat at my kitchen table on Thanksgiving and ate the food I cooked, knowing he was going to destroy my life."

Gabriel stood upright, his jaw set in stone.

"Blood doesn't make people family, Claire."

"Loyalty does."

"And those two men traded your life for a twenty percent stake in a sinking distribution racket."

A soft chime sounded from the desktop.

Claire looked down at an incoming encrypted message that had just bypassed the primary firewall of Mercer Freight's central server.

"Someone is pinging the Racine server right now," Claire said, her posture instantly stiffening.

"From where?" Gabriel demanded.

Claire typed rapidly, running a reverse traceroute through three proxy nodes.

"It's coming from an IP address registered to the Gold Coast."

"A penthouse on Lake Shore Drive."

"That's Moretti's personal residence," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into that chilling, quiet register.

"He’s looking for the confirmation of your transfer."

"He expects Evan to deliver the signed confession tonight."

Claire’s fingers hovered over the keys.

"What should I do?"

"Can you spoof the confirmation?" Gabriel asked.

Claire looked up at him, a sudden flicker of boldness showing behind her exhaustion.

"I can make that server say whatever I want it to say."

"I can send him a corrupted payload that will freeze his offshore accounts for forty-eight hours."

Gabriel looked down at her, genuine respect flashing in his dark eyes.

"Do it."

"Freeze his accounts."

"Make him panic."

"When a rat thinks the water is rising, he always runs to his strongest ally."

"And who is his strongest ally?" Claire asked, hitting three rapid execution commands on the terminal.

"My cousin, Dominic Vale," Gabriel answered coldly.

"The one who pushed me to expand the Mercer Freight contracts eighteen months ago."

Claire felt a cold chill run down her spine.

The rot didn't stop with her father and brother; it reached straight into the heart of Gabriel's own empire.

The pieces were falling into place with terrifying speed.

Dominic Vale had positioned Mercer Freight to fail, Evan had stolen the money to buy Moretti's favor, and Claire was meant to be the body left behind to take the blame.

"The payload is delivered," Claire said softly, watching the progress bar on the screen turn bright green before dissolving into an error code.

"Moretti's secure node just crashed."

"He won't be able to access the Panama clearinghouse until Tuesday."

Gabriel reached out and placed a large, warm hand on her shoulder.

The contact was steady, grounding, and deliberate.

"You did well, Claire."

"Now, you need to rest."

"I can't sleep," she whispered, looking out at the storm crashing against the glass.

"Every time I close my eyes, I see Evan standing over me with that folder."

"I see my father telling me I'm useless."

Gabriel pulled a chair beside her, sitting down so that his eyes were level with hers.

"Look at me, Claire."

She turned her head, meeting his intense, piercing gaze.

"You are sitting in the most heavily fortified estate in the state of Illinois," Gabriel said.

"There are twelve men outside with automatic rifles who report only to me."

"Nobody is coming through those doors."

"Nobody is forcing you to sign anything ever again."

"And tomorrow morning, you are going to walk into my holding facility, and you are going to look your father in the eye while I take back everything they stole from you."

Claire’s lips parted slightly, her breath hitching.

"You're going to kill them?"

Gabriel did not answer immediately.

He looked at the small, fragile woman who had lived her entire life under the thumb of cruel, petty men.

"Death is an easy way out for men like Richard and Evan Mercer," Gabriel said quietly.

"They don't fear dying."

"They fear poverty."

"They fear irrelevance."

"They fear having to stand in a room where nobody respects them, nobody listens to them, and nobody gives them credit for work they didn't do."

He stood up, walking toward the heavy mahogany door.

"I'm going to take away their money, Claire."

"I'm going to take away their company."

"And I am going to give every single share of Mercer Freight to the only person who actually earned it."

"To you."

He paused at the door, turning his head back toward her.

"Elena left clean clothes in the wardrobe."

May you like

"Sleep, Claire."

"Tomorrow, we go to work."
