Chapter 5 - The Fall of the House of Mercer

The storm broke at exactly 2:15 p.m. on a Tuesday. I was sitting in the sunroom of Adrian's estate, overlooking the manicured lawns that rolled down toward a private beach on Lake Michigan. Leo and Maya were asleep in a twin bassinet beside my armchair. The house was silent, save for the crackle of the fireplace.

The television on the wall was muted, but the breaking news banner was impossible to ignore. FBI RAIDS MERCER DEVELOPMENT HEADQUARTERS. Helicopter footage showed agents carrying boxes out of the glass tower—the same tower I had fled just a week ago. I unmuted the TV.

"...sources say the investigation centers on massive embezzlement and the misappropriation of pension funds connected to the controversial Riverfront Project. CEO Grant Mercer has reportedly been taken into custody for questioning." The camera cut to ground level. Grant, wearing a bespoke suit, being escorted to a black SUV by two federal agents. He looked furious. He looked terrified. He didn't look untouchable anymore.

Behind him, another agent was escorting Savannah Reed. She was trying to hide her face behind a designer handbag. It wasn't working. I took a deep breath. The heavy, invisible weight that had been sitting on my chest for a year finally lifted. I was free.

The front door of the estate opened, and heavy footsteps echoed in the foyer. Adrian walked into the sunroom a moment later. He looked tired, but victorious. He walked straight to the bassinet, checked on the babies, and then sat on the sofa opposite me. "Did you see?" he asked. "I saw." "It's done. His board is convening an emergency meeting to oust him. The feds have the digital footprint. He's looking at twenty years, minimum."

I looked at my hands. "What did he say? When they arrested him?" Adrian unbuttoned his suit jacket. "He blamed you. First thing out of his mouth. He said his ex-wife handled the dummy corporations." My stomach dropped. "And?" "And," Adrian smiled, a sharp, predatory thing, "the FBI agent showed him the timestamped photos of you in Paris during the week the accounts were opened. Photos provided by my team. Then they showed him the IP logs tracing back to Savannah's laptop."

I let out a shaky laugh. "You really thought of everything." "I don't play games I can't win, Claire." He stood up and walked over to the built-in bar, pouring two glasses of sparkling cider. He handed me one. "To new beginnings," he said. I clinked my glass against his. "To new beginnings."

We sat in silence for a while, watching the snow start to fall outside the window. "So what happens now?" I asked. "To your company? To the Riverfront project?" "The city will re-bid the project. Cross Atlas will likely win it. But honestly, I don't care about the concrete right now." He turned his head to look at me. "I care about what happens to you."

I swallowed hard. "I have my settlement from the divorce. I have my own degree. I can start over." "You don't have to do it alone." The air in the room shifted. It wasn't business anymore. It wasn't about defeating a rival. He moved closer, sitting on the edge of the coffee table so he was at eye level with me. "When I started digging into Grant's life to find leverage, I found you. I saw how he treated you. I saw how you carried yourself with such grace in a house that was essentially a cage." He reached out, his fingers lightly tracing the back of my hand. "I fell in love with a ghost in those files, Claire. And then, when you texted me that night... the ghost became real."

My heart hammered against my ribs. "Adrian... I'm a mess. I'm freshly divorced. I have two infants." "I'm not asking for a wedding tomorrow," he said softly. "I'm asking for permission to stay. To be here. For you. For Leo. For Maya." I looked at the babies, then back to the man who had torn down an empire just to keep us safe. I turned my hand over and intertwined my fingers with his. "You can stay."
