Chapter 8 - The Sun Rises Again

One year later.

The morning air was crisp and bright.

I stood in front of the massive new building in the center of the city. The ribbon stretched across the double glass doors, waiting to be cut.

Above the doors, gleaming silver letters spelled out:

THE ETHAN STERLING PEDIATRIC RESEARCH CENTER

Hundreds of people were gathered. Doctors, nurses, families.

I stepped up to the podium. I wasn't wearing black anymore. I wore a bright yellow dress—the color of the uneven crayon suns Ethan used to tape to my fridge.

"Thank you all for being here," I said into the microphone. My voice was steady. "A year ago, I lost my world. I learned how dark life can get. But I also learned that we have the power to bring the light back."

I looked at my father, who was standing in the front row, beaming with pride.

"This center is fully funded. No family will ever have to pay for their child's critical care here. No mother will ever have to choose between going to work and sitting by her child's bed."

The crowd erupted into applause.

I took the oversized scissors and cut the ribbon.

Life had broken me in the worst way possible. It had taken my innocent boy and shattered my trust.

But I hadn't let it destroy me.

As I walked through the bright, colorful halls of the new hospital, listening to the sounds of children laughing in the playroom, I felt a warmth spread through my chest.

I looked out the massive window at the blue sky.

I imagined my little boy with his dinosaur pajamas, smiling down at me.

Mommy is okay, Ethan, I thought to myself. Mommy is finally okay.
