Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER’S CONFESSION: HOW THE CRASH WAS ORCHESTRATED ON THE LAKE FOREST HIGHWAY

Caleb took a step backward, his back hitting the doorframe as the weight of the room crushed down on him.

“I didn’t want her dead, Adrian,” Caleb stammered, raising his hands defensively. “I swear to God, that wasn't the plan!”

The admission hung in the air like poison gas.

Margaret closed her eyes, letting out a long, defeated sigh. “Caleb, you fool,” she muttered.

Adrian closed the distance between himself and his brother in two long strides. He grabbed Caleb by the lapels of his designer suit jacket, slamming him back against the doorframe with enough force to rattle the hinges.

“What was the plan, Caleb?” Adrian hissed, his voice vibrating with a lethal, controlled fury. “Talk to me right now, or I swear I will throw you out of this window.”

“Let go of me!” Caleb choked out, struggling against Adrian’s grip before going limp, tears pricking the corners of his eyes. “We just wanted to scare her! Madison hired a specialist—a guy who disabled the anti-lock braking sensors remotely on her Mercedes. It was supposed to make her spin out on the interstate so she’d miss her meeting with the SEC investigator in Chicago. It was supposed to buy us two weeks to restructure the accounts!”

Madison closed her eyes, muttering curses under her breath at Caleb’s betrayal.

“You tampered with her car?” Adrian whispered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped his brother’s jacket. “You put her on a wet highway with disabled brakes?”

“The storm hit harder than the meteorologists predicted,” Caleb cried, his voice breaking. “She lost control at the Lake Forest curve before the override could be disengaged remotely. We watched the police scanner from the office. When the report came in that she didn’t survive... Madison burned the primary communication drives in the office incinerator.”

“And you kept quiet,” Adrian said, his voice dropping to a whisper so cold it chilled the room. “For three years, you sat across from me at Thanksgiving, you drank my scotch, you watched me fall apart—and you kept quiet.”

“We had to protect the family, Adrian!” Caleb sobbed. “If the foundation collapsed, we all went down—you included! Your entire lifestyle, your gallery, your investments—it all came from that money!”

“I don’t give a damn about the money,” Adrian said, his voice trembling as he shoved Caleb away, sending his brother stumbling across the rug.

Adrian looked down at the red Cartier box in his hand. Inside lay Claire’s wedding ring—the ring Madison must have stripped from her finger after the crash site was cleared, keeping it as a morbid trophy or forgetting it was tucked inside the compartment when she looted the room later.

“Madison,” Adrian said slowly, turning his gaze toward the blonde woman standing by the door. “You had keys to this house. You came here while I was away in New York last year, didn’t you? You tried to open the cedar panel, but the mechanism jammed.”

Madison lifted her chin, her fear momentarily replaced by defensive arrogance.

“And what if I did?” Madison sneered. “You were never going to look inside. You were too busy drowning in your own self-pity to notice anything right in front of your face. I was going to be Mrs. Westwood. I was going to have it all.”

“You’re not going to be Mrs. Westwood,” a calm, small voice piped up from near the vanity.

Everyone turned.

Emma was standing by Claire’s silver hairbrush, holding her stuffed rabbit under one arm. Her wide, innocent eyes locked onto Madison with chilling clarity.

“The blue lady dropped something else when she opened the wall,” Emma said softly.

Adrian frowned. “What did she drop, Emma?”

The little girl walked over to the vanity, reached behind the decorative skirt of the dressing table, and pulled out a small, metallic object, holding it up in her tiny palm.

It was a silver key fob embossed with the Mercedes-Benz logo—and a valet parking tag bearing Madison Cole’s initials and the date of the crash.
