Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Slaughter

The glass-walled boardroom of Vale Heritage Group overlooked the sprawling city skyline, a symbol of power that the Vale family had clung to for three generations.

Today, it felt like a cage.

I stood in the adjacent observation room, hidden behind tinted glass, watching the chaos unfold. Julian stood beside me, perfectly calm, holding a sleek leather folio.

Inside the boardroom, Graham was sweating through his bespoke suit. He was pacing at the head of the massive mahogany table, shouting at the twelve board members.

"This is an illegal hostile takeover!" Graham roared, slamming his fist onto the table. "Mercer Holdings is a shell company! They have no legal right to freeze our operations. I demand an immediate vote to authorize litigation!"

Evelyn sat near the corner, looking haggard. Her hair was frizzy from the rain the night before, and she was wearing the same dress. Beside her sat Adrian, violently chewing his thumbnail, his eyes darting toward the door.

"Graham," one of the senior board members, Richard, interrupted with a sigh. "We can't authorize litigation. Mercer didn't just buy our debt; they bought us. They hold sixty-eight percent of the voting shares. We don't even have the authority to use the bathroom without their permission right now."

"Who the hell is running Mercer?!" Adrian snapped, slamming his phone onto the table. "They won't answer their legal lines. They just sent a damn email saying the new CEO would address the board at 9:15!"

I glanced at the Rolex on my wrist. It was exactly 9:14.

"Showtime," Julian murmured.

I smoothed the lapels of my crimson power suit. The color of blood. The color of the rug. It was intentional. I hid my bruised ribs behind impeccable posture and pushed open the heavy oak doors.

The room fell into absolute, deafening silence.

Graham stopped pacing. Evelyn gasped, her hand flying to her pearls. Adrian’s jaw actually dropped.

"Claire?" Adrian breathed out, confusion warring with anger on his face. "What are you doing here? How did you get past security? Get out, we are in the middle of a crisis!"

I didn't look at him. I walked slowly, deliberately, toward the head of the table. Julian followed closely behind, flanking me like a shadow.

Graham’s face turned violently purple. "You stupid girl! Who let you in here? Security! Someone call security right now!"

I reached the head of the table. Graham refused to move, trying to use his physical size to intimidate me. I simply looked at him, my expression completely blank.

"You're in my chair, Graham," I said softly.

"Are you insane?" Graham spat, raising his hand as if he might strike me again.

Julian stepped forward smoothly, placing a hand on Graham’s chest and shoving him back with surprising force. "I suggest you step away from the CEO, Mr. Vale."

The entire boardroom erupted into murmurs.

"CEO?" Adrian choked out, standing up. "What are you talking about? Claire is a stay-at-home wife! She doesn't have a dime!"

I turned to the board members, placing both hands flat on the mahogany table. "Good morning, gentlemen. For those who don't know me, my name is Claire Mercer. Until yesterday, I was Claire Vale. I am the sole owner and founder of Mercer Holdings. And as of 4:00 PM yesterday, I own this company."

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush diamonds.

Adrian looked like he had been struck by lightning. His eyes darted from my face, to Julian, to the board members who were quickly doing the math in their heads.

"No," Evelyn whispered, shaking her head frantically. "No, her family was nobody. She had nothing."

"My family valued privacy, Evelyn," I corrected coldly. "I built Mercer Holdings in college. I married Adrian because I loved him, not because I needed his dying legacy. I stepped back to be a wife. To be a mother." My voice hitched for a fraction of a second, but I forced it to steel. "But since you made it clear that I have no value in your family, I decided to take back mine."

I gestured to Julian, who began passing out thick, glossy folders to the board members.

"What is this?" Richard asked, opening his folder.

"That is a forensic audit of Vale Heritage over the last five years," I announced, my voice carrying to every corner of the room. "You'll find detailed records of Graham Vale siphoning pensions into offshore accounts, and Adrian Vale falsifying SEC filings to cover it up."

Graham grabbed his chest, stumbling backward. "You... you bitch. You stole those files!"

"I didn't steal them. I bought them," I smiled, a terrifying, empty smile. "As the new majority shareholder, my first order of business is the immediate termination of Graham and Adrian Vale, with cause. My second order of business is handing these files over to the FBI."

Adrian rushed toward me, panic finally replacing his arrogance. "Claire, wait! Please! We can talk about this! You're my wife!"

"Not anymore," I said, sliding the signed divorce papers across the table. "You wanted me to sign them. So I did. You have thirty seconds to leave my building before I have you arrested for trespassing."
