Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Empire

Nathan stared down at the paper. It wasn't a legal brief; it was an itemized ledger, printed on heavy cotton bond with an embossed watermark.

Item 1: 2016 Seed Round ($2.5M). Source: Carter Family Trust. Item 2: Core Algorithm Patent #44892 (Enterprise Logistics Engine). Registered Inventor: Evelyn A. Carter. Item 3: Sheridan Lane Estate Purchase & Maintenance (2018–2026). Funded entirely by Vanguard Global Assets. Item 4: Strategic Bailout of Whitmore Innovations (March 2024). Anonymous investor: Evelyn A. Carter.

“No,” Nathan whispered, shaking his head. “No, that’s impossible. I wrote that code. I coded the logistics engine in my garage during the winter of twenty-fifteen.”

“You wrote the interface, Nathan,” a calm, familiar voice spoke from the doorway.

The entire boardroom turned.

I stood in the doorway, wearing the same trench coat I had worn the night before, though I had removed it to reveal a sleek black silk blouse underneath. My hair was down now, falling in soft waves around my shoulders. I didn't look like a woman who had been cast out into the midnight rain. I looked like an owner returning to inspect her property.

“Evelyn,” Nathan breathed, taking a half-step forward before stopping himself as the two Sterling & Vance attorneys shifted slightly to block his path.

“You wrote the user interface because you liked the buttons to be blue,” I said, walking slowly toward the table, my heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. “You spent three weeks arguing about the shade of indigo while the backend database architecture—the recursive routing algorithms that actually made the software functional—was written by my grandfather’s research division in Zurich.”

I stopped beside Dorothea, resting my hand lightly on the back of the chairman’s chair.

“Every major client you’ve ever signed,” I continued, my voice entirely level, “was managed through backdoor introductions arranged by my mother’s philanthropic network. When your server crashed in 2022 and you thought AWS performed a miracle rescue? That was our private server farm in Virginia kicking in to save your contracts.”

Carter Bloom stood up, his face twisted in panic and disbelief. “This is a conspiracy! You’re just bitter because he left you! You can't just hijack a multi-million-dollar company because of a bitter divorce!”

I turned my gaze slowly toward Carter. The temperature in the room seemed to drop another ten degrees.

“Carter Bloom,” I said softly. “Chief Operating Officer. Annual salary: three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Plus undisclosed kickbacks from the Meridian supply chain contracts.”

Carter’s face drained of color. He staggered backward, his hip bumping against the edge of the water station. “I—I don't know what you’re talking about.”

“You signed three shell company invoices in August of last year, routing forty thousand dollars in kickbacks into an offshore account in the Caymans,” I said, pulling a thin tablet from my coat pocket and sliding it across the table toward him. “Would you like me to project the bank statements onto the screen, Carter, or would you prefer to pack your desk now while security is still feeling polite?”

Carter looked at the screen, then at Nathan, then back at me. Without saying another word, he turned on his heel, grabbed his briefcase from the side chair, and bolted out of the boardroom, the heavy doors swinging wildly behind him.
