Chapter 3 - The Tee-Off Tantrum: When Derek’s Luxury Golf Fantasy Hits A Green-Fee Reality Check

By 1:15 PM, the Lake Geneva championship golf course was shimmering under a warm, late-summer sun. The manicured fairways rolled like green velvet down toward the glittering water, framed by towering ancient oaks and pristine white-sand bunkers. It was a golfer's paradise, boasting a reputation as one of the most exclusive private-access courses in the Midwest.
Out on the first tee box, my father and my brother Derek were holding court. Dressed in matching custom-embroidered polo shirts that cost upwards of two hundred dollars apiece, they were surrounded by three of Dad's affluent business associates whom he had invited specifically to showcase his wealthy, influential family.
Derek was warming up with his newly rented custom graphite clubs, taking exaggerated practice swings that nearly clipped the head off a passing course marshal. He loved nothing more than an audience, especially when he could perform the role of the privileged scion of a wealthy dynasty.
"Watch this drive, gentlemen," Derek announced loudly, addressing Dad's business friends as he stepped up to the tee. "Got these custom sticks fitted this morning. Grand View spares absolutely no expense for our group. When you're staying in the presidential suite, the entire resort practically bends over backward."
Dad stood nearby, sipping an iced electrolyte drink handed to him by a young attendant, nodding with smug paternal pride. "That's how the Pattersons operate, boys. Excellence across the board. No cutting corners, no budget mentalities. We settle for nothing less than absolute perfection."
A few yards away, the course pro shop manager, a seasoned veteran named Marcus who had managed the club for fifteen years, was quietly reviewing his digital tablet alongside the head greenskeeper. His phone buzzed softly in his pocket with a high-priority push notification direct from regional headquarters.
Marcus glanced down at the screen. His eyes widened slightly as he read the incoming system directive flagged in bold crimson text: Master Folio Patterson (Room 801) - Administrative Review Active. All complimentary tier-one upgrades, VIP courtesy waivers, and discretionary promotional credits are suspended effective immediately. Standard corporate billing schedules and non-member premium surcharges apply to all incidental rentals, green fees, and tournament packages.
Marcus blinked, double-checking the account ID. It was tied directly to the massive family reunion booking that had been granted a courtesy VIP package months ago by upper management. But the override came straight from the top administrative channel—an authorization code that could only be executed by the sole majority owner herself.
He didn't question it. In the hospitality business, you didn't argue with the ultimate authority; you executed protocol with absolute precision.
Marcus stepped out onto the patio overlooking the first tee just as Derek lined up his stance, waggled his driver twice, and unleashed a powerful swing that sent the white golf ball soaring in a clean, high arc down the center of the fairway.
"Now that," Derek shouted, spinning around to flash a triumphant grin at the gallery, "is a ten-thousand-dollar swing!"
The business associates applauded politely, murmuring words of admiration.
Marcus walked up calmly, holding his digital tablet under one arm, and approached my father, who was lounging comfortably in his golf cart.
"Excuse me, Mr. Patterson," Marcus said politely, keeping his voice smooth and professional.
Dad turned around, a wide, genial host-smile plastered across his face. He assumed Marcus was coming over to fawn over his party or offer complimentary post-round cigars. "Ah, Marcus! Beautiful course you've got here. Absolute perfection. My son’s driving game is looking stellar today, wouldn't you say?"
"It’s a fine drive, sir," Marcus replied evenly. "I actually just need to have a quick administrative word regarding your master folio setup for today's tournament."
Dad waved a dismissive hand, chuckling richly. "Oh, put everything on the master suite account, Marcus. You know the drill. Presidential suite booking covers all tournament fees, club rentals, cart rentals, and post-round clubhouse dining for our entire party of twelve golfers."
Marcus didn't blink. He tapped his tablet screen, bringing up the updated billing breakdown. "Actually, Mr. Patterson, that is precisely what I needed to clarify. As of noon today, per a direct administrative audit from regional corporate oversight, all complimentary VIP courtesy waivers and promotional fee exemptions attached to your group block have been systematically revoked."
Dad’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second, his brow furrowing. "Revoked? What are you talking about? We booked the presidential suite package months ago. Full VIP privileges were explicitly guaranteed in our contract."
"Contracts are subject to periodic administrative review and compliance audits, sir," Marcus explained smoothly, reciting the corporate policy verbatim. "Effective immediately, all green fees, premium club rentals, equipment insurance, and tournament entry fees are no longer covered under promotional waivers. They are being billed at standard non-member resort rates, plus a mandatory twenty-five percent peak-season administrative surcharge."
Silence descended upon the tee box. Derek, who had been walking back from his shot with a strut, stopped dead in his tracks. The business associates quietly lowered their golf clubs, suddenly very interested in the distant scenery.
"Are you out of your mind?" Derek snapped, marching over and inserting himself into the conversation. "Do you know who we are? We are the Pattersons! My father’s account is footing a fifty-thousand-dollar bill this week alone! What kind of bush-league scam are you running here?"
Dad’s face flushed a deep, angry crimson, the smug composure completely evaporating. He stood up from his golf cart, pulling himself up to his full height, attempting to radiate corporate intimidation. "Listen to me, manager. I demand to speak to your supervisor right now. This is completely unacceptable. You cannot humiliate me in front of my guests like this over a billing clerical error."
"There is no error, Mr. Patterson," Marcus said, his voice remaining terrifyingly calm and polite. "The directive came down straight from regional administration following a comprehensive portfolio audit. Every charge is fully accounted for."
"Fine!" Dad barked, snatching his platinum card out of his leather wallet and slapping it violently against Marcus’s tablet screen. "Run the damn card! Pay for the round, pay for the rentals, pay for whatever stupid surcharges your corrupt little club has invented! Just process it and get out of my face before I call corporate and have your entire staff fired by suppertime!"
Marcus calmly accepted the card, slid it through the mobile terminal, and waited for the chip to read. A moment later, the portable terminal beeped sharply—a soft, high-pitched double-tone that indicated a transaction authorization hold.
Marcus glanced down at the screen, then looked back up at my father with a completely neutral expression.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Patterson," Marcus said quietly. "Your primary card has triggered a temporary fraud protection hold due to a sudden spike in unverified multi-thousand-dollar transactions across multiple resort departments within the last hour. The terminal is declining the charge."
Derek let out a loud, incredulous snort. "Declined? Are you kidding me? Dad, use your backup card! This is completely absurd!"
Dad’s hands were shaking slightly as he fumbled through his leather wallet, pulling out a second high-tier black card and thrusting it at the manager. "Try this one! It has an unlimited credit limit! Run it again!"
Marcus took the second card, inserted it into the reader, and waited. A few seconds later, the terminal let out the exact same flat, echoing beep.
Declined - Administrative Security Hold.
The golf course suddenly felt deafeningly quiet. The afternoon breeze rustled through the oak trees overhead, but nobody said a word. Dad’s business associates awkwardly cleared their throats, shuffling their feet on the manicured turf, realizing they had accidentally walked straight into a public financial trainwreck.
Dad stared at the portable terminal as if it were a physical object that had personally insulted his ancestors. His face was dark red, his chest heaving under his monogrammed golf shirt.
"This... this is an outrage," Dad stammered, his voice losing its booming confidence and cracking slightly around the edges. "Your system is broken! Your staff is incompetent! I want James Hendricks on the phone right now! Get the regional director out here this instant!"
Marcus calmly handed both credit cards back to my father, slipping his tablet back under his arm with quiet grace.
"Mr. Hendricks is currently unavailable, sir," Marcus replied smoothly. "However, if you wish to resolve your account verification and clear the security holds on your master folio, you are welcome to walk down to the main concierge desk, pay your outstanding interim balance in certified funds, or speak directly with regional administration regarding your compliance audit."
Without waiting for another word, Marcus turned on his heel and walked gracefully back toward the clubhouse, leaving my father standing stranded on the first tee box with two declined credit cards, an angry son, and three highly uncomfortable business associates who were suddenly remembering urgent prior engagements.
Sitting one mile away in my quiet coffee shop booth, my tablet screen blinked gently as the real-time notification update landed in my inbox:
Incident Log #1042-A: Location: Championship Golf Course - Pro Shop Event: Master Folio Transaction Attempt / Security Hold Triggered. Status: Declined / Unresolved. Notes: Guest attempted primary and secondary payment methods; both flagged and frozen under active owner review directive.

I closed the tablet, took a slow, satisfying sip of my latte, and smiled.
That was just the first hole. They still had the spa, the yacht cruise, and the formal Saturday night gala to look forward to.
