Chapter 9 - The Price of Neglect

The iron gates behind Julian Cole were blocked by the unmarked tactical vehicles.

Four state troopers in dark windbreakers stepped out into the rain, their handguns holstered but their hands resting on their utility belts.

A tall, broad-shouldered man with a military buzz cut stepped forward: Marcus Briggs.

“Julian Cole?” Marcus called out, his deep voice carrying over the sound of the rain.

“Step away from the stairs.”

Vanessa scrambled out of the Escalade, screaming into the wind.

“Julian, what is happening?”

“Get in the car!” Julian barked, spinning around, his umbrella slipping from his hand and clattering across the wet driveway.

“This is an unlawful stop!” Julian yelled at the troopers.

“I am legal counsel for Davenport Consortium!”

“You are the subject of an emergency arrest warrant issued forty-five minutes ago by Chief Judge Evelyn Carter of the Northern District of Illinois,” Marcus said, pulling a laminated document from his vest.

“Aggravated identity fraud, attempted grand larceny, and corporate extortion.”

“And Mrs. Vanessa Whitmore,” Marcus added, turning toward the terrified woman standing by the car door, “you are being detained under warrant for felony aggravated battery to a child.”

Vanessa shrieked, backing away toward the shrubs, her heels sinking into the wet mulch.

“Daniel! Daniel, tell them!”

“I did this for us!”

“I took care of your children when you couldn't stand to look at them!”

Daniel stood on the porch steps, the rain beginning to mist over his hair and shoulders.

He looked down at Vanessa.

There was no anger left in his face.

Only a devastating, crushing clarity.

“You didn't take care of them, Vanessa,” Daniel said, his voice steady and calm.

“You managed them like an acquisition.”

“And I let you do it because I was too weak to carry the pain of Rachel’s death.”

“That was my crime.”

“And I will answer for that every day of my life to my children.”

“But you will answer to the state.”

Two troopers moved swiftly, pinning Vanessa’s arms behind her back with quick, professional efficiency.

The metal handcuffs clicked shut around her wrists with a sound that seemed to shatter the remaining tension of the night.

Julian was pressed against the hood of his Escalade, his designer coat soaked, his face twisted in disbelief as another trooper read him his constitutional rights.

The flashing blue lights painted the limestone facade of the mansion in surreal, rhythmic pulses of cold color.

Daniel turned his back on the driveway.

He walked back through the heavy front doors and shut them firmly, turning the brass deadbolt.

The mansion went quiet once more.

The sound of rain against the high windows was the only noise left in the cavernous foyer.

Robert Vance descended the stairs, holding his laptop.

“The state police are impounding their computers in the loop as we speak,” Vance said quietly.

“The emergency custody petition before Judge Miller has been formally struck from the record.”

“Judge Miller himself is currently being contacted by the judicial oversight committee.”

Daniel rubbed his face with both hands, the weight of the last four hours settling into his spine like iron weights.

“Is Lily awake?”

“She’s in her room, Daniel,” Vance said gently.

“Martha made her warm milk.”

“The real way.”

“With the honey.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

He began to climb the stairs, one step at a time.

His empire was safe.

His company was secure.

His stock value would survive the morning news cycle.

And none of it meant anything at all.
