Chapter 5 - The Fall of an Empire

The media storm hit by Tuesday afternoon. The financial correspondents that Grant had so arrogantly invited to dinner were the first to break the story.

The details of the private jet confrontation leaked—likely through Julian’s carefully managed PR contacts. The image of a pregnant founder wearing a wire, outsmarting her corrupt husband and his mistress, captivated the public. Whitmore Biologics’ stock initially dipped on the news of the arrest, but as soon as Wall Street digested the fact that Claire had surgically removed the rot and secured the company’s core patents, the stock surged.

Grant’s empire crumbled with astonishing speed. In the federal holding facility, stripped of his tailored navy suits and forced to wear an orange jumpsuit, Grant’s arrogance finally gave way to reality. His high-priced defense attorneys advised him to take a plea deal. The audio recording from the jet was too damning. “I have you committed for acute peripartum psychosis… The paperwork is already drafted by a psychiatrist on my payroll.” That single sentence upgraded the charges from corporate fraud to criminal conspiracy and attempted kidnapping. The medical professional he had bribed flipped on him immediately for immunity.

Sloane Davis fared no better. Evicted from her penthouse, her corporate accounts frozen, she tried to sell her story to a tabloid. She claimed she was a victim of Grant’s manipulation. She claimed she didn't know Claire was being coerced.

Julian made sure the airport security footage found its way to a prominent news network. The video showed Sloane, wearing her fuchsia coat, violently yanking a visibly pregnant Claire out of an SUV and dragging her toward the jet stairs. The public backlash was swift and merciless. Sloane’s socialite friends abandoned her. The country club revoked her membership. Faced with accessory charges and mounting legal debt, she turned on Grant, agreeing to testify against him in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Grant sat in a windowless interrogation room with his lawyer when he heard the news of Sloane’s betrayal. He stared at the blank wall. He had built his entire life on the assumption that people were greedy and predictable. He thought he could buy Sloane’s loyalty. He thought he could exploit Claire’s love for her family. He had been wrong on both counts.

Four months later, the trial concluded before it ever reached a jury. Grant Mercer pleaded guilty to five federal charges. He was sentenced to fourteen years in federal prison, with no possibility of early parole. As he was led out of the courtroom, he looked toward the gallery, hoping to see Claire. He wanted to see anger. He wanted to see triumph. He wanted to know that he still mattered to her, even as an enemy.

But Claire wasn't there. She hadn't even bothered to attend the sentencing. She was entirely indifferent to his fate. That realization broke Grant more than the prison sentence ever could.

Sloane received three years of probation and a massive fine that bankrupted her. She moved back to Scranton, taking a job as a receptionist in a dental office, forever haunted by the shadow of the wealth she had tried to steal.
