Chapter 8 - The Aftermath and New Beginnings

The destruction of the Whitaker empire was swift and merciless. By the end of the week, the board of trustees had ousted Grant from his own foundation. The state attorney general launched a massive investigation into the funds Grant had embezzled to pay Sloane's "consulting firm."
I didn't just divorce him; I decimated him. Helena ensured that the prenuptial agreement was voided due to his criminal behavior, though I didn't want a single cent of his dirty money. I just wanted my freedom and my mother's jewelry. Sloane was arrested at the airport trying to flee the country. The charge was grand larceny—the diamond bracelet on her wrist was registered, insured, and documented as stolen property from my safe. She sobbed in her mugshot, and this time, the tears were real.
Regina Whitaker tried to call me once, begging me to call off the media hounds, crying about their family legacy. I simply hung up and blocked her number. Their legacy was built on lies; it deserved to burn.

A year later, I walked through the halls of the Lillian Wilde Adler Center for Nursing Excellence. The scent of antiseptic and clean linen was no longer a reminder of my near-death experience, but a symbol of my rebirth. I was healthy, vibrant, and entirely my own woman.
A young nurse smiled at me as I passed the bronze plaque bearing my mother's name. I stopped for a moment, tracing the cold metal letters with my fingertips. I wore the diamond bracelet on my right wrist, the stones catching the bright hospital lights. I had walked into this building as a victim, a woman silenced and discarded. I was leaving it as an architect of my own destiny. I stepped out through the glass doors into the warm afternoon sun, took a deep breath of fresh air, and smiled. The silence was finally broken, and the rest of my life was just beginning.
