Chapter 8 - The Evidence Unfolds

On the giant projection screen, the 1978 property transfer ledger filled the room in brilliant, unforgiving detail.
“Exhibit A,” Maggie announced, pointing a laser pointer at the screen. “This is the binding of the county register for October 1978. Notice the modern synthetic nylon threading—a manufacturing technique that did not exist in municipal bookbinding until 1994.”
Malcolm Veseri shifted in his seat, his polished composure cracking for the first time as his attorney scrambled to review his notes.
“Exhibit B,” Maggie continued, clicking to the next slide, which showed the side-by-side comparison of the excised paper grain. “This page was physically cut out of the county master ledger using a surgical scalpel, and a forged substitute was stitched in its place to fraudulently insert a defunct shell company controlled by Veseri Capital into the ownership chain.”
Arthur Vance stared at the screen, his face turning pale as the cameras from the press gallery flashed rapidly in the dim room. “Mrs. Rinaldi... are you testifying that these municipal records have been falsified?”
“I am stating under oath, and with forty-eight hours of verified forensic conservation analysis, that the document submitted by Veseri Capital is a crude forgery manufactured within the last five years,” Maggie stated clearly, looking directly at Malcolm across the aisle.
Malcolm stood up abruptly, his voice cutting through the murmurs of the room. “This is an absurd fabrication! A disgruntled municipal employee and the Rinaldi defense team trying to salvage a failing project!”
Sebastian finally stood up, his towering presence commanding the entire room without a single raised voice. “Mr. Veseri is right about one thing,” Sebastian said, his voice cold and flat. “This is about salvage.”
He stepped forward, placing a heavy manila envelope directly on the commissioner's desk. “Inside that envelope are certified federal affidavits from the printing company that manufactured the exact synthetic nylon thread found in the altered ledger—purchased directly by a front company registered to Malcolm Veseri in 2021.”
The room erupted into total chaos. Reporters shouted questions, flashbulbs blinded the front row, and Arthur Vance hammered his gavel furiously against the wooden block, completely losing control of the proceeding.

Malcolm turned a furious, mottled shade of red, glaring across the room at Sebastian with pure venom. “You think this wins it for you?” Malcolm hissed loudly enough for the front microphones to catch. “You've just declared open war, Rinaldi. You and your little academic wife.”
Sebastian didn't blink. He simply stepped closer to Maggie, putting his arm around her waist in a public, unmistakable gesture of absolute solidarity as he looked at Malcolm and said, “The war was over before you sat down at my table, Malcolm. You just didn't realize you'd already lost.”
