Chapter 3 - The Illusion of Power

“That… that’s impossible,” Grant whispered, his voice cracking.

He looked at me as if I had suddenly transformed into a monster.

“My father founded Mercer Dynamics,” Grant stammered, stepping back further into the foyer. “This is our company. You’re just a retired lawyer!”

Evelyn, having heard the commotion, hurried out of the dining room. When she saw the men in suits and the police officers, she gasped, pressing a hand to her chest.

“Grant? What on earth is happening?” she demanded shrilly.

I turned to Evelyn, my expression hardening into stone.

“What is happening, Evelyn,” I said softly, “is that the rules are being changed.”

I looked back at Daniel Ross. “Daniel, Grant was just telling us about his upcoming promotion to Chief Operating Officer tomorrow morning.”

Daniel snorted in contempt. “Is that right?”

“Yes,” I continued calmly. “He also mentioned his plans to phase out the current board. He called you a dinosaur, I believe.”

The board members shifted uncomfortably, glaring daggers at Grant.

“I… I didn’t mean it like that,” Grant stuttered, holding his hands up defensively. Panic was finally breaking through his arrogant facade. “Mr. Ross, please, this is a misunderstanding. She’s twisting my words.”

“I don’t care what you said about me, Grant,” Daniel replied coldly. “I care about the urgent message I received from Mrs. Sterling regarding a severe breach of our company’s moral and ethical codes.”

I reached into my handbag and pulled out a manila envelope. I had kept it in my safe for years, waiting for the day it might be needed.

“Twenty-two years ago,” I addressed the room, my voice ringing with absolute authority, “Mercer Dynamics was drowning in debt. Grant’s father begged my late husband for a bailout. We provided the capital to save this company, on the condition that our family trust retained thirty-eight percent of the voting shares.”

I took a step closer to Grant, invading his space until he was forced to look down into my eyes.

“I let your family run the day-to-day operations,” I whispered, “because I believed your father was an honorable man. But you are not your father, Grant.”

I turned to the Police Commissioner. “Thomas. My daughter is sitting in that dining room. She has a dislocated shoulder, heavy bruising on her collarbone, and defensive marks on her wrists. This man inflicted them.”

“That’s a lie!” Evelyn shrieked, marching forward. “She fell! She’s clumsy and hysterical! Grant was only trying to calm her down!”

“Enough,” Commissioner Vance snapped, his voice booming like thunder. He gestured to the two officers behind him. “Secure the premises. Nobody leaves.”

Grant backed into the wall, shaking his head. “You can’t do this. I’m a respected executive. I’m the next COO!”

“No, Grant, you are not,” Daniel Ross interjected sharply.

Daniel pulled a document from his inner jacket pocket and handed it to Grant.

“As Chairman of the Board, backed by the majority shareholder, I am formally terminating your employment at Mercer Dynamics, effective immediately. You are stripped of all titles, salaries, and stock options. Your office access has already been revoked.”

Grant stared at the termination letter, his hands trembling violently.

The empire he thought he ruled, the power he thought he wielded—it was all an illusion. And with a single phone call, I had ripped it away.

“You’re ruining my life,” Grant whispered, looking up at me with sheer terror in his eyes.

“No,” I replied, my voice completely devoid of pity. “You ruined your life the moment you laid a hand on my daughter. I am simply delivering the consequences.”

I turned my back on him and walked straight back into the dining room.

It was time to get Claire.
