Chapter 5 - THE MORNING TRAP AT CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS

The morning sun broke over the glittering glass skyscrapers of downtown, casting long shadows across the bustling plaza outside Ryan’s corporate headquarters. By 8:45 AM, the lobby was already humming with employees sipping coffee, executives reviewing quarterly reports, and administrative assistants rushing between meetings.

Ryan and I walked through the glass revolving doors side by side, dressed in sharp, professional business attire. We looked like a united executive team, though the reality of our partnership was far more complex.

As we stepped off the elevator on the top-floor executive suite, we spotted Vanessa sitting in the leather armchair outside the boardroom. She looked immaculate in a tailored white Chanel suit, her hair styled to perfection, sipping an espresso as if she already owned the entire building.

When she saw us walk down the hallway, her smug, triumphant smile spread across her face.

“Well, well, well,” Vanessa purred, standing up and smoothing her skirt. “Look who decided to show up for their own execution. Did you sleep well last night, Ryan? Or were you too busy calculating how many years you’ll spend in a federal penitentiary?”

Ryan kept his expression ice-cold, stepping past her without breaking stride.

“Save your breath, Vanessa. The board meeting hasn't started yet.”

Vanessa laughed, stepping right behind us as we pushed open the heavy oak doors of the boardroom.

“Oh, you can posture all you want, darling. But at 9:00 AM sharp, my lawyer and the state registry representative are arriving to officially record the transfer of ownership. By 9:05 AM, you’ll be packing your desk, Ryan.”

Inside the boardroom sat the three senior members of the board of directors, looking anxious and confused, alongside Ryan’s corporate attorney, Mr. Henderson, who looked like he had swallowed a lemon.

As we took our seats at the mahogany table, the glass double doors swung open again.

A tall man in a sharp gray suit walked in, carrying a leather briefcase, accompanied by a woman wearing official state notary badges.

“Good morning, everyone,” the man announced, introducing himself as Mr. Vance, the legal representative from the State Corporate Registry. “We are here to oversee the emergency asset transfer and corporate restructuring filing for Vanguard Holdings, requested by Mrs. Vanessa Vanguard.”

Vanessa stepped forward triumphantly, opening her designer handbag and pulling out the manila folder we had placed in her safety deposit box the night before—unaware it now contained the decoy papers.

“Here are the original, unredacted transfer deeds, signed and notarized by Mr. Ryan Vanguard himself,” Vanessa announced proudly, handing the folder directly to Mr. Vance. “As you will see, all corporate assets, intellectual property, offshore accounts, and real estate holdings are formally assigned to my private holding entity.”

Mr. Vance adjusted his reading glasses, pulled out the documents, and began flipping through the pages. The boardroom fell into absolute, breathless silence. Every eye was locked on the state official as he scanned the dense legal paragraphs, checking signatures and corporate seal stamps.

After what felt like an eternity, Mr. Vance stopped on page four. He frowned, pulled a magnifying loupe from his pocket, and examined a specific corporate identification number at the bottom of the page.

Vanessa tilted her chin up, radiating arrogance. “Everything in order, Mr. Vance?”

Mr. Vance slowly lowered the papers, took off his glasses, and looked up at Vanessa with a deeply perplexed expression.

“Mrs. Vanguard... where did you obtain these documents?”

Vanessa blinked, her confident smile faltering for a split second. “From my private safety deposit box at the First National Bank. They are legal, binding transfer deeds signed by my husband.”

Mr. Vance shook his head slowly, a grim look crossing his face.

“These documents are legal, yes. But they do not transfer what you think they transfer.”

Vanessa’s smile vanished completely. Her chest tightened. “What are you talking about? Read page two! It transfers the primary firm and all its assets!”

Mr. Vance turned the page around and laid it flat on the mahogany table for everyone to see.

“Page two assigns ownership of Vanguard Ventures Sub-Zero LLC,” Mr. Vance read aloud clearly. “Which is a bankrupt corporate subsidiary currently carrying five million, four hundred thousand dollars in unsecured commercial debt, pending federal tax liens, and active class-action lawsuits from unpaid suppliers.”

The entire boardroom erupted into whispers. The board members stared at Vanessa in utter shock.

Vanessa’s face drained of color until she looked like chalk. She snatched the papers from the table, her hands shaking violently as her eyes scanned the fine print.

“No! No, this is a mistake!” Vanessa shrieked, her composure shattering instantly. “These aren't the papers I put in my safe! These have been swapped!”

She whirled around, pointing a trembling finger directly at me.

“You! You did this! You broke into my safe last night!”

I didn't flinch. I calmly leaned back in my leather chair, crossed my legs, and gave her a sweet, poisonous smile.

“Prove it, Vanessa,” I said smoothly. “You claim I broke into your safe? Then you’ll have to explain to the police how a private safety deposit box registered to you contained corporate fraud documents that you allegedly stole from Ryan’s private files in the first place.”

Vanessa froze. Her mouth opened, but no words came out. If she called the police to report stolen documents, she would automatically confess to corporate espionage, blackmail, and theft of private property.

She was trapped in her own web of greed.

Ryan stood up slowly from the head of the table, towering over her with an expression of cold, unrelenting authority.

“Security,” Ryan said, his voice echoing through the quiet boardroom.

Two large corporate security guards immediately stepped inside the doorway.

“Escort Mrs. Vanguard out of the building. Revoke her keycard, confiscate her company-issued devices, and make sure she never sets foot on this property again.”

May you like

“Ryan, you can’t do this to me! I’ll destroy you! I’ll ruin your life!” Vanessa screamed, thrashing as the security guards grabbed her arms and dragged her backward toward the double doors.

“You already tried, Vanessa,” Ryan replied coldly, watching her exit without an ounce of sympathy. “And you failed.”
