Chapter 10 - The Final Confrontation

I walked into the interrogation room.
Ryan looked up, his eyes bloodshot.
"Em..."
"Don't," I cut him off, sitting across from him.
"I'm sorry," he whispered. "I was a coward. I was so scared of going to prison, I lost my mind."
"You didn't lose your mind, Ryan. You made a choice."
I leaned forward.
"You watched me undergo surgery after surgery. You watched me cry in agony from the skin grafts. And you let me believe you were leaving because I was ugly."
"No! Never that," he protested, crying now.
"Yes, that. You weaponized my trauma to keep me quiet. You manipulated my reality so you could escape with your money."
"I loved you, Emily."
"You loved the fact that I was a convenient alibi," I corrected him flatly. "You told the police you saved me. You stole my courage."
He had nothing left to say. He just sat there, weeping.
"I'm signing the divorce papers," I told him, standing up. "And I'm keeping the insurance payout for the house. Consider it restitution for the medical bills."
"Emily, please..."

"Goodbye, Ryan. I hope Denver was worth it."
I walked out of the room, leaving him alone with the consequences of his ambition.
