Chapter 9 - The Fallout

The next morning, the news broke like a hurricane.

We didn't wait for the press to dig up the story; Eric hired a top-tier PR firm to control the narrative.

Headlines across the world blared the shocking truth:

WHITAKER TECH COO ARRESTED IN BIZARRE EXTORTION PLOT.

BILLIONAIRE'S STOLEN HEIR RESCUED IN FBI STING.

Eric released a carefully worded statement confirming the arrest, ensuring the focus remained on David's corporate crimes and the miraculous return of our child.

David’s legal team tried to spin a defense, but with the wiretap recording and the paper trail of the forged clinic documents, they had nothing.

He was facing twenty years for corporate espionage, embezzlement, kidnapping by proxy, and extortion.

Maya, true to our word, was granted full immunity for her cooperation with the federal authorities.

We met with her one last time at a quiet coffee shop near the airport before she flew back to her hometown.

"I don't expect you to forgive me," Maya said, looking down at her tea.

"You made a terrible choice," I told her honestly. "But when it mattered most, you chose to protect my daughter. For that, I am grateful."

Eric slid a white envelope across the table.

"What's this?" Maya asked.

"It's a clean slate," Eric said. "Enough money to pay off your brother's legal fees and start over somewhere new. Don't waste it."

Maya looked at the check inside and burst into fresh tears, nodding her thanks.

We left her there, walking out into the bright California sunshine.

The drive back to La Jolla felt different.

The heavy, oppressive silence that had suffocated our marriage for the past year was gone.

"You know," Eric said, holding my hand across the center console. "We still haven't officially named her."

I smiled, leaning my head against the leather seat.

"I've been thinking about that," I said. "Her birthmark... it looks like a little moon."

"Luna," Eric said softly, testing the name on his tongue. "Luna Whitaker."

"It suits her," I agreed.

When we pulled through the gates of our estate, the ocean was sparkling blue, a stark contrast to the silver, ominous water I had seen just a week prior.

Detective Miller was waiting in the foyer, alongside a social worker.

"The paperwork is finalized," the social worker announced, handing us a thick folder. "Given the DNA results and the extraordinary circumstances, the judge expedited the legal guardianship and birth certificate amendments."

"She's officially ours," Eric said, signing the last line on the document.

"She always was," I corrected him, taking the pen and adding my own signature.
