Chapter 8 - The Collapse

Chaos erupted, though it was a subdued, upper-class kind of chaos. Guests scrambled to collect their coats and bags, desperate to avoid being photographed near a crime scene. The detectives parted the sea of fleeing socialites and approached the center of the room.
“David Silva?” the lead detective asked, though we had already spoken on the phone.
“Yes, Detective. The two individuals you are looking for are right here.” I gestured toward Beatriz, who was now sobbing hysterically on the floor, and Julian, who looked like he was about to faint.
“Julian Vargas, you are under arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and conspiracy,” the detective stated, signaling his officers. Two men grabbed Julian roughly by the arms, slapping handcuffs on his wrists. He didn't fight back; he was entirely broken, muttering to himself in disbelief.
The detective then turned to my wife. “Beatriz Silva, you are under arrest for grand larceny, conspiracy to commit fraud, and felony child endangerment.”
Beatriz screamed as the cold steel closed around her wrists. She kicked off her expensive heels, thrashing wildly. “No! I am his wife! I own half of this! You can't do this to me! David, tell them! Tell them it's a mistake!”
She locked eyes with me, her expression a mix of sheer terror and desperate fury.
I walked slowly toward her, stopping just out of her reach. I looked down at the woman who had terrorized my daughter.
“You own nothing,” I told her quietly, so only she could hear. “Our prenup had a morality and criminal conduct clause, which you just spectacularly violated. I've moved every asset, every penny, out of your reach. Your credit cards are canceled. Your car is repossessed. And tomorrow morning, my lawyers will file for an annulment and a permanent restraining order. You are leaving this house with exactly what you brought into it: absolutely nothing.”
“I’ll destroy you!” she shrieked, spit flying from her lips as the officers dragged her toward the door. “I’ll tell the press! I’ll tell everyone you're a monster!”
“They already know the truth,” I replied, gesturing to the empty room. “And once they see the footage of how you treat an eight-year-old child, you won't be able to show your face in this country ever again.”
Her screams echoed down the long driveway as they shoved her into the back of the police cruiser. The flashing blue and red lights illuminated the manicured gardens, the same gardens where I had watched Isabella struggle just days before.
The detective stayed behind for a moment. “We have the hard drives secured, Mr. Silva. With this evidence, neither of them will see daylight for a very long time. Are you and your daughter going to be alright?”
“We will be,” I said, feeling a massive, crushing weight lift off my chest. The toxic air had finally been cleared from my home. “Thank you, Detective.”

After the police left and the last of the caterers hurried out the back door, the villa was bathed in absolute silence. It wasn't the heavy, suffocating silence of secrets anymore. It was the peaceful quiet of a sanctuary reclaimed.
I poured myself a neat scotch, walked out onto the terrace, and looked out over the dark Mediterranean Sea. The empire I had built was safe, but more importantly, the monster was gone. The nightmare was over.
