Chapter 5 - The Legal Storm and the Final Ultimatum

The following Monday morning arrived with a biting chill that signaled the true arrival of autumn. While the rest of the world went about their normal routines—commuting to offices, dropping kids off at school, rushing through morning coffees—our house remained locked in a tense, surreal bubble of legal reality.

At 9:00 a.m. sharp, Detective Vance—no relation, thankfully—called to update me on the status of the case. Michael had spent the weekend in a holding cell at the county detention center, unable to post bail because David and Jessica had suddenly developed severe amnesia regarding their financial involvement and refused to front the bond money. Olivia had tried to hire a high-priced defense attorney, but when she realized the retainer fee required actual liquid cash rather than empty promises of future restaurant profits, her legal representation vanished like smoke.

"The District Attorney's office has formally reviewed the bodycam footage, the 911 audio log, and your photographic evidence," Detective Vance informed me in a brisk, professional tone. "They are pressing charges for second-degree assault, attempted coercion, and document fraud. Given that it's a domestic incident involving an elderly victim and physical injury, the judge is unlikely to go easy on him at the arraignment this afternoon."

"Thank you, Detective," I replied steadily. "Keep me updated."

"Will do, Mr. Vance. One more thing—your son's defense counsel has requested a supervised meeting with you and Mrs. Vance prior to the afternoon hearing, claiming he wants to issue a formal apology and negotiate terms."

"Tell his counsel the answer is no," I said without a moment's hesitation. "There is nothing left to negotiate."

I hung up the phone and walked into the living room. Sarah was sitting in her usual armchair, wrapped in a comfortable knit shawl, reading a book. The bruise over her right eyebrow had turned a deep, ugly shade of purple and yellow, but the tension in her shoulders had noticeably eased since Friday night.

"That was the detective," I said gently, sitting down on the arm of her chair. "Michael's arraignment is this afternoon. His lawyer tried to set up a meeting for an apology."

Sarah looked up from her book, her expression calm, sorrowful, but remarkably resolute. "Did you say yes?"

"I told them no," I answered softly. "We're done playing their game, Sarah. For twenty-six years, we've cleaned up his messes, bailed him out of financial scrapes, and excused his selfishness because we thought that's what parents were supposed to do. But this time, he crossed a line that can't be uncrossed. He hurt you in our own home for a piece of paper."

Sarah reached out, placing her warm hand over mine. Her fingers were no longer trembling. "I know, Edward. It hurts more than I can put into words, but I know you're right. If we don't let him face the consequences now, he will destroy everything—including himself."

At 2:00 p.m., I stood outside the county courthouse downtown, watching the steady stream of people walking up the wide stone steps. The autumn wind whipped past, carrying dry leaves across the pavement. I didn't go inside for the arraignment—Detective Vance had assured me my physical presence wasn't mandatory for this preliminary stage, and Sarah needed her rest at home.

Instead, I stood by the stone pillar, pulled out my phone, and drafted a final email to Michael's court-appointed public defender, copying Olivia and David for good measure so there could be no misunderstanding whatsoever.

Effective immediately, all family financial support, property sharing discussions, and personal communication between Michael Vance and our household are permanently terminated. Any future attempts at contact by Michael, Olivia, or their associates will be treated as harassment and reported directly to local law enforcement. Let the legal system handle the rest.

I hit send. The digital message zipped through the airwaves, crossing the city in milliseconds, sealing a chapter of our lives that had taken decades to write and only minutes to tear apart.
