Chapter 2 - The Empire of Dust

“Get in,” my father said.

I didn't move. The rain pounded against the umbrella held by the security guard.

“Daniel, please,” he said, gesturing to the open door of the Maybach SUV. “I will explain everything.”

I glanced back at the glass doors. Vanessa was staring at us, her mouth hanging open, while her father frantically dialed his phone.

I stepped into the leather-scented interior. My father climbed in beside me, and the doors shut heavily, blocking out the sound of the storm and Vanessa’s screams.

The convoy began to move, leaving the Hale estate in the rearview mirror.

“Who are you?” I asked. My voice trembled.

My father sighed, rubbing his tired eyes. “My name is Thomas Mercer. I founded Mercer Global Industries thirty years ago.”

“Mercer Global?” I choked on the words. “They own half the real estate in the city. They build tech infrastructure. Dad, we lived in a one-bedroom apartment with a broken heater!”

“Because I had to protect you,” he said firmly, turning to face me. “When you were three years old, your mother wasn't killed in a random car accident.”

My heart stopped. “What?”

“It was a targeted hit,” he said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “I was ruthless back then. I made enemies. One of them tried to have me killed to tank the company stock. They missed me and hit her.”

I stared at his scarred hands. “So you faked poverty?”

“I handed the daily operations to my board,” he explained. “I created a fake identity. I wanted you to grow up safe, far away from the poison of wealth. I wanted you to know the value of a dollar, of hard work, of loyalty.”

“You lied to me my whole life.”

“I saved your life,” he corrected gently. “And today, I watched you throw away a fortune because you defended a poor man. You proved you are ready.”

“Ready for what?”

The man in the front passenger seat turned around. It was the executive who had greeted him.

“Ready to take your rightful place, sir,” the man said. “I am Marcus, your father's chief of staff. We have been watching you for years.”

I leaned back against the headrest, my mind spinning. “Why reveal it now, Dad? Why today?”

“Because of Richard Hale,” my father said, his expression hardening. “I did a background check on him when you got engaged. I didn't like what I found, but I let it play out to see his true colors.”

“He’s bankrupt, isn't he?” I guessed.

Marcus smiled grimly. “Worse. Hale’s company is drowning in fraudulent debt. He was hoping to use your marriage to secure loans from his associates. He thought you were an easy mark to control.”

“Instead, he insulted the man who actually owns the bank threatening to foreclose on him,” my father said.

I looked out the window at the passing city lights. My entire life had been a test, and I had just graduated.

“So, what happens now?” I asked.

“Now,” my father said, adjusting his cheap tie, “we go to the office. It’s time you met your employees.”
