Chapter 7 - The Rat In The Cellar

The basement of the mansion was vast, divided into a storage area and a climate-controlled wine cellar.

The heavy oak door to the cellar was the only way in or out.

We watched the camera feed as Ryan switched on a small flashlight.

He moved quietly, confidently, navigating the dark room.

He walked straight to the back corner of the wine cellar, pushing away a heavy wooden rack.

Beneath a loose stone in the floor was the hidden safe.

“He’s going for it,” Crawford whispered. “Wait until he opens it.”

We watched as Ryan knelt on the floor, spinning the dial.

He was frantic, his breath visible in the cool air of the cellar.

Click.

The heavy metal door of the floor safe swung open.

He reached inside and pulled out thick stacks of cash and documents, shoving them into his duffel bag.

“Now,” Crawford commanded.

We moved silently down the basement stairs.

Crawford went first, his weapon drawn. I followed closely behind, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm.

Sarah stayed at the top of the stairs, clutching a heavy iron fireplace poker.

We reached the entrance to the wine cellar.

Crawford slammed the heavy oak door shut.

The loud bang echoed through the basement like a gunshot.

Crawford immediately threw the heavy exterior deadbolt, locking Ryan inside.

“Hey!” Ryan shouted from inside, his voice muffled by the thick wood.

He threw himself against the door, the wood groaning under his weight.

“Open this door, Emily! I swear to God!”

I stepped up to the small grated window in the center of the door.

I clicked on the basement lights.

Ryan was standing there, clutching his duffel bag, his face twisted in rage.

He looked haggard, desperate, and completely deranged.

“It’s over, Ryan,” I said, my voice steady and cold.

“The police are already on their way. They’ve surrounded the house.”

He dropped the bag and pressed his face against the grate.

“Emily, please. You loved me. For eleven years, you loved me!”

He tried to cry, tried to summon those fake tears that had manipulated me for over a decade.

“Think about Lily! Do you want her father to die in prison?”

“You are not her father,” I said firmly. “A father protects his family. You only protect yourself.”

“You stole our money, you broke my heart, and you struck me.”

“You are nothing to us anymore.”

Sirens began to wail in the distance, growing louder by the second.

Ryan realized his manipulation wasn't working.

His sadness instantly vanished, replaced by pure, ugly hatred.

“You bitch!” he screamed, banging his fists against the reinforced glass of the grate.

“I’ll kill you! I’ll kill both of you!”

He ranted and raved like a madman, showing his true, sociopathic colors.

Sarah walked down the stairs and stood beside me, looking through the grate.

She looked at the man she had married, the man she had mourned.

“You’re pathetic, Richard,” she said quietly.

The police swarmed the basement a minute later.

They unlocked the door, drew their weapons, and dragged him out of the cellar in handcuffs.

As they walked him past me, he didn't say a word.

He just stared at the floor, finally defeated.

I watched them take him up the stairs, and I felt a massive, suffocating weight lift from my chest.

May you like

I took a deep breath of the cool basement air.

It was over. We had won.
