Chapter 8 - Reclaiming the Empire

A year later, the air in San Diego felt lighter.
The scandal had faded from the front pages, replaced by the ongoing success of my business. The $6.2 million had been fully recovered, traced back through the Caymans and the crypto wallets thanks to Hugo's ledger and Vanessa's confession. I used a portion of it to open two new boutique locations in Los Angeles, expanding my empire further than ever before.
Ryan was serving his time in a medium-security facility in Nevada. I heard through the grapevine that he was struggling, unable to manipulate the guards the way he manipulated women. Vanessa was on probation, working as a cashier at a discount grocery store, a far cry from the Parisian villas she had dreamed of.
Janelle was completely ostracized from polite society. Without my money to fund her charity events and church breakfasts, her "friends" had abandoned her instantly. She was living in a small studio apartment, working as a receptionist at a dental clinic. There were no more luxury SUVs, no more Rolexes, no more preaching about exemplary marriages.
As for Hugo, we maintained a quiet, respectful relationship. I bought him a small, beautiful cottage near the coast where he could read his books and listen to the ocean. He had lost his family, but he had retained his honor, and for that, I made sure he was comfortable for the rest of his life.
I stood on the balcony of my La Jolla mansion, feeling the warm California breeze against my skin. The house had been entirely redecorated. Every trace of the Ambrose family, every piece of heavy, oppressive furniture Janelle had chosen, was gone. The space was bright, modern, and entirely mine.

I poured myself a glass of expensive champagne, raising it to the sunset. I had survived the betrayal, outsmarted the parasites, and taken back everything that belonged to me. I wasn't just the woman who funded the Ambrose family anymore. I was Charlotte Ruiz, and I was finally, wonderfully, free.
The end.
