Chapter 8 - A New Command

Two years later.

The Sterling Manor was completely transformed.

It was no longer a cold museum of wealth. It was a loud, chaotic, messy home.

Bicycles were parked on the front lawn. Muddy cleats sat on the marble porch.

I stood on the balcony, drinking a cup of coffee, looking out over the grounds.

Julian was in the backyard, wearing a faded t-shirt and jeans, acting as the referee for a highly competitive family soccer match.

He blew a whistle, and Emma cheered as she scored a goal past Ethan.

Julian scooped Emma up and spun her around.

I smiled, taking a sip of my coffee.

Julian and I were not back together.

Some things, once broken, cannot be glued back perfectly. I didn't love him as a husband anymore.

But I had forgiven him.

We were co-parents. Partners in raising the five most important people in the world.

He had stepped down as CEO, handing the daily operations to a trusted board, so he could be a full-time father.

He had finally learned that real wealth wasn't in the bank accounts.

It was right here, running across the grass, calling him "Dad."

Arthur Pendelton walked out onto the balcony, holding a stack of papers.

"The new scholarship fund is finalized, Genevieve," Arthur said warmly. "Your signature is required."

I signed the documents without hesitation.

"Harrison would be very proud of you," Arthur said, looking down at the happy chaos in the yard. "You brought this family back to life."

"No," I replied, setting the pen down. "I just brought the truth. The kids did the rest."

I watched my five children laugh as Julian dramatically pretended to faint on the grass after a soft kick from Rose.

I had survived the humiliation. I had survived the exile.

I had returned to the battlefield, and I had won the only war that mattered.

The war for my family's future.

And as the sun broke through the clouds over the Georgia sky, I finally knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that we were going to be okay.
