Chapter 4 - Unearthing the Rot

The next three days were a whirlwind of absolute secrecy and relentless action.
While Daniel remained in his office, desperately trying to find alternative funding and playing a game of quiet stalling with Vanessa, I transformed the manor’s library into a war room.
I did not act alone. Rosa, my fiercely loyal house manager, and Luis, the young gardener Vanessa had humiliated, became my most trusted allies. They knew the wealthy circles; they heard the gossip that the elites whispered when they thought the 'help' wasn't listening.
I also made a call to an old friend of my late husband, a private investigator named Thomas who specialized in forensic accounting and corporate espionage.
“I need everything on Vance Global, Thomas,” I told him over an encrypted line. “Not the polished PR reports. I want the dirt. I want to know where Arthur Vance buries his skeletons, and I want to know exactly what Vanessa Vance has been doing for the last five years.”
By Wednesday evening, Thomas sat across from me in the library, sliding a thick, manila folder across the mahogany desk.
“You were right to trust your instincts, Eleanor,” Thomas said, tapping the folder. “The Vance family isn't throwing you a lifeline. They're grabbing onto you to stop themselves from drowning.”
I opened the folder, my eyes scanning the heavily highlighted documents.
“Explain,” I demanded.
“Vance Global is a house of cards,” Thomas said grimly. “Arthur Vance made some catastrophic bets on offshore real estate two years ago. The market tanked. He’s been moving money around illegally just to cover the interest on his loans. They are completely illiquid.”
I looked up, realization dawning on me. “The merger with Whitmore Enterprises...”
“It’s not a bailout for Daniel,” Thomas confirmed with a smirk. “It’s a parasite attaching itself to a healthy host. Once the merger goes through, Arthur Vance has clauses hidden in the fine print that allow him to liquidate Whitmore assets to cover Vance Global’s debts. He would hollow out your son’s company from the inside out within a year.”
Anger flared in my chest, hot and bright. “And Vanessa?”
Thomas sighed, pulling out a separate stack of photos and police reports.
“Vanessa is worse than her father. She targets wealthy, vulnerable men. Daniel fits her profile perfectly—rich, a bit isolated, carrying the weight of a family legacy. She has three broken engagements in the past four years. Every single time, the ex-fiancé paid a massive 'settlement' to keep her quiet about some fabricated scandal.”
I stared at a photo of Vanessa smiling brightly on the arm of a European tech billionaire who had mysterious gone bankrupt shortly after their split.
She wasn't just a spoiled, cruel brat. She was a professional predator.
“Rosa,” I called out softly.
Rosa stepped out from the shadows of the bookshelves. She had been listening to everything. Her eyes were hard, the memory of Vanessa’s abuse still fresh in her mind.
“Yes, Mrs. Whitmore?”
“The annual Whitmore Foundation Charity Gala is this Saturday,” I said, tapping my fingers rhythmically against the polished wood of the desk. “Vanessa informed Daniel she plans to attend to make a 'public statement' about their unbreakable love.”
“Shall I have security bar her at the door, ma'am?” Rosa asked eagerly.
“Oh, absolutely not,” I smiled, a genuine, terrifying smile. “I want her there. I want her father there. Give them VIP tables right at the front. Ensure the press has the best lighting possible.”

Thomas chuckled, leaning back in his chair. “You're setting a trap, Eleanor.”
“I’m simply giving Vanessa the spotlight she so desperately craves,” I replied, closing the file. “She thinks she can hold my family hostage. She thinks the working class are animals beneath her feet. It’s time she learned what happens when the animals bite back.”
