Chapter 8 - No Longer Ruthless

Nighttime used to be my greatest enemy. It used to be the time when the ghosts of my past came out to play, when the terror seized my children, and when I was forced to face my own failures as a father.

But tonight was different.

I walked down the hallway of the boys' wing. The lights were dimmed to a soft, warm glow. I peeked into Luca's room. He was sprawled out like a starfish, snoring softly, a stuffed bear clutched in his fist. I moved to Mateo's room. He was curled up under a mountain of blankets, dreaming peacefully. Finally, I checked on Leo. My brave, resilient oldest boy was fast asleep, a book open on his chest. I gently removed it, turned off his bedside lamp, and left the door cracked open.

Total, absolute peace.

I walked back down the hall and entered my master bedroom. The heavy steel shutters were up, letting the moonlight spill across the floor.

Marisol was sitting on the edge of the bed, brushing out her dark hair. I walked over, took the brush from her hand, and set it on the nightstand. Then, I pulled her to her feet, wrapping both arms around her waist.

"They're all asleep," I murmured against her neck, breathing in the sweet scent of vanilla and lavender that always clung to her.

"No screaming?" she asked, wrapping her arms around my neck, a playful smile on her lips.

"Not a sound," I confirmed.

I looked into the eyes of the woman who had walked into a house full of terror and completely dismantled it with nothing but patience and courage. Twenty women had run from the Mercer estate in fear. But the twenty-first woman didn't just stay. She conquered the monsters. She tamed the Ruthless mob boss. She gave three broken boys their childhood back.

"I love you, Marisol," I said, the words feeling foreign but incredibly right on my tongue. I had never said them to anyone since my wife died.

Marisol’s smile softened into something deeply tender. She reached up, framing my face with her hands. "I love you too, Julian."

I kissed her, slow and deep, sealing the promise of a new life. Outside, the city of New York continued to roar. The underworld continued to spin its webs of crime and danger. But inside this house, behind these walls, the mob boss didn't exist anymore.

There was only a father, a mother, and a family finally free from the dark.

THE END.
