Chapter 9 - The EvictionI opened the thick manila envelope and slid out the final legal document onto the table, placing it directly under the officer's flashlight.

“Before the wedding ever took place,” I stated clearly, “Gavin pressured my daughter Isla to sign a strict prenuptial agreement to wave any and all claims to his personal assets. He told her it was for his family's financial protection.”
“He thought he was being clever. So, I decided to take steps to protect her as well. Without her knowledge, I purchased this entire property through the trust.”
Isla stared at the legal paper with wide, realizing eyes, the pieces of the puzzle finally falling into place.
“This entire five-bedroom house was placed into a private real estate trust,” I explained to the officers. “The trust was created exclusively for the benefit of Isla Pembroke. Not for Gavin Crest.”
“He only had legal permission to reside in this home as her current, non-abusive spouse,” I added, my voice hardening. “That legal permission ends completely tonight due to the violation of the trust's safety clauses. He is a trespasser.”
Penelope staggered back a few steps as if she had been physically struck by a heavy blow, her hand flying to her mouth. “This is our family home... you can't just throw us out into the street!”
“No,” a voice suddenly called out from the sofa.
Everyone in the room turned around to look.
Isla stood up very slowly. She allowed the cold rainwater to drip from her cotton dress directly onto the pristine, imported white rug that Penelope loved more than actual human beings.
Her left cheek was visibly bruised, and her bare knees were still bleeding from the sharp gravel, but her posture had changed. The fear was gone.
Despite her physical injuries, her voice came out remarkably clear, strong, and resonant.
“It was never your home, Penelope,” Isla said firmly, looking her mother-in-law dead in the eye.
Gavin took a sudden, aggressive step toward her, his face contorted in a desperate attempt to regain control. “Isla! Do not be incredibly stupid about this! Think about your future! You're nothing without me!”
The nearest police officer immediately stepped into his path, his hand resting firmly on his baton, blocking Gavin from moving even an inch closer to her. “Step back, sir! Do not move toward the victim!”
I walked over to the couch, picked up the legal folder, and handed it directly to my daughter.
“You are the sole legal owner of this entire estate, Isla. You get to decide exactly what happens next,” I told her, wrapping my arm around her shoulder.
Her hands trembled significantly, but she opened the folder anyway.
The entire silent room watched her read through the trust deed, the emergency court filings, the detailed bank account statements, and the photographs of her own bruised face. She was looking at the physical proof of her survival.

Then, she lifted her head and looked directly into her husband’s terrified eyes.
“I want him removed from this property immediately, officers. And I want his family gone with him.”
